I have to agree, I have no problem with lack of official support but I downloaded portable and followed mkidd's instructions of moving the old folder, installing to program files, and renaming the exe and have had zero issues. Why exactly does the installer specifically prohibit windows 7 if the portable has no issues?
calibre uses Qt5 for the GUI, and Qt's WebEngine component for
implementing various features like the E-Book Viewer, PDF printing /
conversion, the ToC editor, the E-Book Editor's preview pane, etc.
Qt5 dropped support for running WebEngine on Windows 7 and the
expectation is it's not "supposed" to work, and calibre cannot promise
to support it. Various people on the help forums at
have described their successes at running calibre
5.x on Windows 7 anyway... but just as many people have reported trying
the portable trick and getting nothing but a black screen.
If it does break, remember that all previous versions of calibre are
available from -ebook.com/ and install the
latest version that works for you. Fortunately, most of calibre's
functionality will continue working just fine without updating, and the
two things that won't, news recipes and metadata download plugins, can
retrieve updated definitions to cope with changes in the remote websites
without requiring you update the entire application.a
So, I have since long time a Sugarsync account that I use to keep my Calibre library in the cloud. So far it has always worked fine when sharing it between multiple Windows computers.
Now, I have set up this Fedora 39 Workstation on my older pc (i7-4770K, 16GB RAM) and installed calibre 7.0 there, same version I have on Windows.
Since Sugarsync does not have a Linux client, I am using rclone to keep things synced.
I have directory "Biblioteca di calibre" in Sugarsync, and I am trying to sync it with /home/marco/Biblioteca di calibre.
There are about 500 directories in there and a total of 2.5GB of files in total (in subdirectories).
I used "rclone mount" to mount the sugarsync directory to the path where calibre looks for its files.
Issuing an ls -lrt there, I can see the files I expect to see (see pictures attached), so I assume the remote configuration and the mount command work fine.
For sure it looks like that, for example:
The result is the same: I can see the books, but not the most recent ones.
I really have no idea what can "confuse" my two calibre instances... It could be a problem in calibre, true, but I really can't see why.
What could be causing this issue?
Ok.
Calibre has this "export library and settings" feature that allows you to move an entire archive: it creates 3 files (which I believe are zip files or so) and then allows you to import them on another calibre. Doing so, everything shows up correctly on Calibre for Linux.
I also tried to copy the library from the usb stick in a subdirectory of my home (/home/marco/Documenti/Biblioteca di calibre), and again: all expected books show up when loading the library from calibre
Well, it "is" reproducible, if I just provide the faulty metadata.db file.
Since it has different size when copied to linux, one don't even need to launch calibre for that. It is sufficient to see if the file is copied exactly as it was.
Other than that, I cannot do. If the devs don't want to fix the issue I can't make them to. What I can do is to provide the file that apparently is not copied correctly.
In the Application field, enter the full path to the Calibre Server executable, calibre-server.exe.If you have installed Calibre in the default location, this will be:C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre-server.exeorC:\Program Files (x86)\Calibre2\calibre-server.exeon 64-bit versions of Windows.
In the Arguments field, enter your arguments to calibre-server.exe. Calibre Server supports manycommand line parametersto specify the preferences you have selected for running the server (Preferences > Sharing over the net):
While we are here, ensure that the Run server automatically when calibre starts box is un-checked.That functionality, which required you to log in before the server started, will no longer be necessary now that AlwaysUp is on the job!
We encourage you to edit Calibre Server in AlwaysUp and check out the many other settings that may be appropriate for your environment. For example, hide the Calibre Server console window (thus avoiding the dreaded Interactive Services Detection dialog), send an email when the Calibre Server crashes, restart Calibre nightly to cure memory leaks, and much more.
Calibre Server not working properly as a Windows Service?
I use ebook-convert.exe from a batch file, and on one of my machines (old Windows vista laptop), any calls ebook-convert.exe prevent further commands in a batch file from running (in that .bat file, or in that cmd shell instance for instance). The conversion to .mobi actually succeeds, prints no errors even in -v -v full verbose mode. I tried versions 1.20.0 and 0.9.6 of calibre portable. It seems to be related to the executable itself, and not to the specific conversion job (just running it with -h flag has same effect). I tried running cmd in administrator mode, wrapping it with 'call' command, nothing helps. Assuming the calibre issue is a black hole that can't be solved, is there a DOS trick I could possibly try to keep batch commands running no matter what odd thing happens with ebook-convert.exe on that machine?
On 31 October 2006, when Sony introduced its PRS-500 e-reader, Kovid Goyal started developing libprs500, aiming mainly to enable use of the PRS-500 formats on Linux.[4] With support from the MobileRead forums, Goyal reverse-engineered the proprietary Broad Band eBook (BBeB) file format. In 2008, the program, for which a graphical user interface was developed, was renamed "calibre", displayed in all lowercase.[5]
Currently, my workaround is simply to close the calibre ebook related window, but it would be good to know if there are other workarounds that can stop the calibre ebook window from opening up when I run jupyter notebook from Bash, if it will not affect the proper functioning of calibre ebook as started from Bash separately by running calibre.
On Macintosh and Windows systems no customisation is required for ebooks from Kindle for Mac/PC, Nook Study, or Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), provided that calibre is run on the same computer and user account as the installation of Kindle for Mac/PC, Nook Study, or ADE to which the books were downloaded. The default key is found and stored in the preferences automatically. Anyone using Linux should read the ReadMe file for details of how to obtain the keys manually.
The DeDRM calibre plugin removes DRM from ebooks as they are imported into calibre. So to use the plugin, just import your DRMed ebooks into calibre, and the DRM will be removed. If you have already imported your ebooks into calibre, you will need to remove the DRMed ebooks and import them again.
The calibre developers are not involved in the development of the DRM removal plugin, and are not able to help with any DRM removal questions. If you have any difficulties following the instructions in this post, the calibre developers will not be able to help.
