On our church website we are now considering to put photos of children. What is the best way to protect them? A persmission slip from the parents does not prevent the criminal from lifting the photo.

It seems a watermark is unsightly, or if it is transparent, how can it prevent a person from lifting the photo or cropping a face?

What software do you recommend for making the photo locked or secure?

Any tips appreciated! Thanks so much.

I don't know about software BUT never include their names especially last names.

Thanks Mary Ann. Oh, yes, we would never use names or addrresses, or email addresses. It's the faces that could be cropped and used for illicit purposes, so I would like to lock the photos if possible.

Are you working with websites and children's photos on them? Do you use only a permission slip from parents, with no special security on the photo itself?

We do have one web site that only has the child's first name and contest grade level - they won an art contest. http://www.illinoisptadistrict28.org/reflections.html

I also do another site in which I use 4 pictures of families. I did get written permission from the parents before I posted those. www.illinoispta.org.

I haven't heard a software that protects. I think that Dreamweaver does pages that can be locked so there must be something out there.

While your hosting service may block downloading (this is pretty common), there is absolutely nothing to stop someone from doing a screen capture or using a camera to take a picture of a screen.

You will have to weigh the risks and benefits. You should have a lawyer review whatever permission slip you are thinking about using.

It is extremely unfortunate there are bad people...

Good luck.

I think the general rules you are following are fair. Do not post a photo
of less than 2 kids and do not identify any kids, especially without their
parents permission.

The only thing else to offer on the download is to keep the image quality
to a minimum. Nothing views online > 72 DPI (so don't bother posting
images at 300 DPI) and there is no real reason to post an image greater
than about 2"x3" (there are always exceptions).

Oh, thanks so much Jim. This is heavy stuff, and you have made it quite clear. I'll pass on this info. I can check with the hosting company, but as you say, that is no guarantee of misuse.
thanks.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate your input. And we missed you last meeting. That bright Eric gave a super program too! I'm glad I didn't miss it.

Your ideas here with size and resolution are good ones.

I have been doing church web sites for many years. I have not used
children from my church on my site. I think Jim and Ed's advice is
correct. I shy away from putting anyone from my congregation on the
site except myself. I don't want to tempt the "crazies". Period.
Bob.
