Although NAS devices are reliable storage, they still can fail. If you cannot get access to the data stored on a NAS, you can try to recover the data using special NAS recovery software. Generally, NAS data recovery boils down to getting the disks from a NAS, connecting them to a PC, and extracting files using data recovery software.

Below are the instructions for a full-scale NAS data recovery which requires turning off the device, removing the drives from it, and connecting them to the PC directly. If your NAS device is functioning normally and all you need is to recover a couple of deleted files, you can first try recovering data directly from a working NAS device in read-only mode, as described here.

I accidently deleted files off my NAS and quickly started searching for a recommended software to do the recovery with. I came across Reclaime and it has worked well with no issues. I'm happy to have the data back in my own hands.

There can only be a single instance of each file. That is, if the file is first put into RAW section, and later its location in the filesystem and name are discovered, the file is moved (not copied) from RAW to its appropriate location. However, files can still appear in a RAW section even in a perfectly correct filesystem recovery. This is because some files can contain other files, like ZIP may contain JPEGs in it. In this case, RAW section may contain "inside" files from the ZIP or other container file.

All of us get used to ignore system requirements when installing software thinking that all tools are designed to run on a regular PC. However, Storage Spaces recovery is not an ordinary task to solve which you need large amounts of resources. So we strongly recommend you learn carefully the minimum system requirements for a PC on which you are going to recover Storage Spaces. Otherwise, you risk wasting a lot of time and getting no result.

I have a ReadyNAS 2120v2 with 4 x 4TB disks in a Raid 5 configuration. Some newer, recent, and important files were deleted before a backup could be run. I am currently investigating ways to run file recovery to retrieve as many files as possible. The ReadyNAS has been powered off to avoid write operations being performed on the disk array.

I loaded a CD with utilities such as a partition manager and a file recovery application, and booted the server from it. However, the partition manager shows an approx 3 TB partition located on the P400 controller (consistent with the amount of data stored in the drives), with no free space and on which operations cannot be performed (except for format). Accessing the partition and reading its contents was unsuccessful.

My ultimate question: What raid controller family is the integrated raid controller within ReadyNAS 2120v2 from? Is it possible to get this raid controller in PCI form? Is there any way to load my raid array into another controller installed in a system that supports running a Windows OS, and thus my recovery utilies?

The standard OS6 RAID is MDADM software RAID with BTRFS volumes, and all RAID configuration is on the drives themselves. The RAID controller you tried may recognize MDADM RAID arrays, but the OS you were using clearly does not recognize the BTRFS file system. There are MDADM and BTRFS drivers available for Windows, both still in beta, that might help. But more mature (though expensive) software like ReClaiMe, which is designed as a recovery product, will likely be more effective.

If no, is there any free and reliable RAID recovery software available? With a quick google search I found ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery software. But I am not sure about its reputation.

There is an excellent program that allows to re-assemble failed arrays even without the hardware/software setup (RAID controller, OS) that was used in the first place: UFS explorer. Notice that I have absolutely no relationship with this, but I've used the software in the past and it worked surprisingly well. Plus the free version allows you to check that it can access your data before buying a license for a complete recovery.

Have you considered contacting some professional data recovery specialists? This might be an easy case for them, if they happen to have the necessary knowledge/tools for that specific controller brand, as the disks themselves might be fine.

After a devastating attempt to independently clone 3 drives that made up a software RAID 0, I wound up with one of the disks overwritten. (Accidentally overwrote the source disk during cloning process with ddrescue.) I have literally spent days attempting to recover the 4TB RAID volume that I had lost. Here's the software that FAILED me...DiskInternals RAID Recovery ($$$)...RAID Reconstructor...EaseUS Data Recovery....but fortunately, I finally found the tools that did the trick: RECLAIME RAID RECOVERY + RECLAIME DATA RECOVERY! The 2 stage recovery process was super easy and Reclaime found my overwritten data quickly! I wound up getting about 95% of my data back intact and usable! Props to Reclaime Data Recovery!

*Note to self...check your command line syntax after you've added a hard drive during a ddrescue cloning session!

Welcome to the community!! That is why backups are so Important. I have had huge success with Diskgetor for hard drive and formatted drivers recovery but backup ahould be the first option and food configuration with RAID will help you highly.

You can easily recover all your lost data from your RAID 0array using Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery-Technician. This softwarerecover data from all types of RAID 0 arrays even if the RAID parameters areunknown.Download the software from the official website here: -raid-recovery.php Opens a new window

I believe our technician attempted or did the recovery. I believe the disks are fine. Just no way that I know of to export the data. It has 2 USB ports, but no video card to see what is happening I will check with our tech in the morning. I believe this is a know issue with this particular NAS. Thanks for all the research and help in this matter. Next to IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with WD. Was on chat hold for 2+ hours yesterday with no success

To recovery a RAID array using physical disks, begin firstly by mounting the disks to the computer. Secondly, select the mounted disks participating in the array. Lastly, select the appropriate RAID Level.

To recovery a RAID array using image files, firstly open each disk image file in ReclaiME Free RAID Recovery. Secondly, select the image files participating in the RAID array. Finally, select the appropriate RAID Level.

ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery is the best free program for reconstituting RAID arrays from their constituent disks. While applications like R-Studio and UFS Explorer can reconstruct RAID arrays quicker than ReclaiMe can, they require extensive understanding of how RAID arrays work. ReclaiME, on the other hand, uses a completely automated process, making it the premiere RAID array recovery program.

If you have some other data recovery software, we might have a transfer instructions on how to feed the RAID configuration into that other data recovery software. This option is available for several well-known data recovery tools, like R-Studio or ZAR.

And finally the paid option is to pay for our ReclaiMe data recovery software and have the RAID configuration transferred to it. This allows file-by-file recovery should the need be, and requires less capacity (you only need the capacity to store the files you need).

It should be noted that R-Studio is not a RAID recovery software. R-Studio can only work with healthy arrays or if you provide the RAID configuration parameters. Considering that the RAID-capable recovery tools are few and far between, we still decided to include R-Studio into our RAID recovery software test.

Note 6
Runtime RAID Reconstructor provides array parameters as a textual description.
ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery provides array parameters as an XML file to use with ReclaiMe data recovery software, or as instructions to use with either R-Studio or ZAR.

The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this RAID recovery program.

ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery is absolutely free and easy-to-use RAID recovery software for most common RAID types: RAID 0, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 0+1, RAID 1+0, and RAID 1E. The program recovers the following RAID parameters: start offset and block size, number of member disks, member disk and data order, parity position and rotation. Once you recovered the parameters using ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery, you can run ReclaiMe data recovery software to recover data from the array; create the array image file; write the array to disk; save layout to the XML file; get the instructions and recover data using other data recovery software. ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery works with hard drives (internal and external), disk image files, hardware and software RAIDs.
