Hi, I've been frustrated with premiere for the past couple days, as I want to get some editing done, but opening the preferences menu when I need to adjust settings causes the entire program to stop responding. From what I've been able to tell, it's only the preferences menu that crashes it.
Solutions I've tried (to no avail):
Updating My Drivers
My Premier Pro crashes when opening any of the preferences menus. I have tried resetting the offences by hunting Alt, reinstalling normally, and the creative cloud removal tool then reinstalling but it is still happening. How can I fix this?
Honestly the only permanent fix I've found for this is to upgrade to a newer version (and deal with an entirely new set of bugs that come with it). Downgrading is usually not an option because you always need "that one function that wasn't added/fixed yet." I dealt with the issue in CC14 and 15, maybe even up until 22.2. I'm sure it went away after updating to 22.6. But that also introduced the (auto)save bug where PPro freezes/crashes on saving. Have you tried installing a newer/older version next to the one you currently have?
I'm guessing you've already tried changing audio hardware preferences, that seemed to work for some (for me the setting wouldn't stick). Some people were having issues because of the microphone input settings. I know it sounds weird, but that was the temporary fix everyone was preaching at the time. I've read posts where third-party plugins like Insta360 or Red Giant were causing problems, but for me personally it also happened on 100% clean installs, no third-party plugins. And ONLY in Premiere. For good measure: in 3 years of editing on this machine, I have NEVER had a similar issue in After Effects.
HEllo, @Zwea @W.Bee could you please share your system information, so that the team has a better view of the parameters in play, or if there is a common denominator to the issue? thank you in advance!
I hope it fixes my problem
my main problem is my computer by default setting my audio hardware input on the microphone and when I wanna work on sound or music for background the sound is not clear...
i have to do input on none to fix it but prefrences is not opening and premiere freezing until i end task it.
After 10 days of frustration with freezing after clicking on preferences I realized, while custom updating nVidia 536.99 studio drvier, I had unchecked the HD Audio Driver checkbox (as it appeared to be the same version and thinking it would only delay install time). What actually happened was the HD Audio driver uninstalled and reverted back to Intel's drivers (verifying with nVidia CS as to why this happens). Premiere was trying to load the audio devices based on nVidia HD drivers and froze. After reinstalling with HD Audio checkbox checked, it solved the freeze issue when accessing preferences. Not sure if this applies to everyone here, but wanted to post what worked for me... cheers!
Jared, I'm having the same issue on my M1 mini OS 13.5.2, and it's been the same on every recent version of Premiere I've installed, including the betas. I didn't bother posting in this thread due to its age and PC focus. I'll keep checking here, and my post is at: -pro-discussions/premiere-crashes-when-i-go-to-preferences-v2...
When I want to change the sequence settings in premiere pro, the window is literally too large for my laptop so I cannot reach the buttons below my screen, also I cannot resize the window too, I don't know how but I remember before resizing a window, but I can't do the same to the sequence settings. The window is also created in a way that it cannot go past the boundaries above your screen. Think there should be a fix for this or something.
I just enocountered the same issue. The only thing I can do to bypass that is to use the TAB key and I press enter once its gone past all the possible options and the only thing it could be is the save/confirm button that you can't see. Hope that helps.
that's probably the case, but let's find out what the actual screen resolution is... I seem to remember this happening to me on my 15" macbookpro which did meet the minimum requirements. Unfortunately, I can't remember the solution, but you might try resetting the workspace or connecting to an external monitor if possible... and demaximize and remaximize the screen (not sure what the technical term for this is, but it's the icon at the top right to the left of the "x"
Yeah tried minimising window but it makes no difference to changing the sequence settings because it cannot be changed. I think that premiere pro should at least be compatible to all screens and have some calibration for resolutions or something.
My text is already at the 100% scale and the "make everything bigger" is at 150% as it is the recommended, and I remember seeing somewhere saying that it is not a good idea to not change it form the recommended option. Other than that, thought I cannot press a button to confirm changes in sequence settings, the settings at least show everything other than the buttons at the bottom, so I can just press enter to save.
Hello, I've had a lot of issues with Premiere.
Originally, I had been using Premiere 2019 for the longest time and was fine. In recent months, I upgraded to 2020, then 2022. It was fine for a long while, then about a few months into 2020, I started SOMETIMES having this issue where after editing a video, clicking "File" to go to export would make the editor unresponsive. I tried waiting 20-40 minutes, nothing, it was dead. Only option to either force-crash it or use task manager to close it, then re-open. And yes, this would happen only sometimes in 2020, then 2022. Cut to now, I had thought that upgrading from 2020/2022 would fix the crashing or freezing issue.
But no, it got worse. Now, in 2023.0 (or 2023.1+) I am fully unable to click "File" when I have a project open. It just immediately freezes. Additionally, if I go to "Edit > Preferences..." clicking anything in the sub-menu also creates the same issue of Premiere going unresponsive indefinitely.
I found online that some people had issues with the "DV Device" setting being set to something automatically, and it could cause the "File" menu to lag or delay and take forever, but if that's the problem here, I can't even open settings to check, it just dies when I try.
Also people have had issues with instability regarding certain NVIDIA driver components like the NVIDIA Studio drivers, since v526.98+ ...
There are a myriad of problems that have cascaded from this simple issue. I can no longer enable/disable GPU acceleration, meaning I am now limited in editor effects and such I can use, I can't change ANY settings inside Premiere, I cannot ever click "File" or "Preferences" with projects open unless I want my editor to crash and potentially lose progress.
I've been pulling my eyes out over this and I legit have a fear of clicking "File" in adobe apps now, I work in video production and music and I have repeatedly hesitated to click "File" in Audition/Photoshop now because I am that scared of losing progress, even when this issue is only with Premiere.
Here's my PC info:
Windows 10 Home (64bit) 22H2 (19045.2604)
Intel i7-10700F
32GBs of RAM
NVIDIA RTX 2060 (driver version 528.49)
I have Premiere on my OS drive which is an NVMe SSD
1080p 144hz Microstep MSI G272 monitor (via HDMI)
Here are the things I've done in a futile attempt to fix this issue:
1. Reinstalled Premiere countless times, before and after many of the below steps
2. Updated, rolled back and then re-installed latest GPU drivers from NVIDIA
3. Updated, rolled back Windows, then updated again
4. Used Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to fully remove all software related to Adobe and/or Premiere Pro
5. Manually delete peak files, media cache, PTX, ect, since I cannot do it from within Premiere
6. Deleted all Adobe/Premiere Pro-related appdata and OS (program files) folders
7. Started a fresh install of Creative Cloud and Premiere (latest version released just 2 days ago!) and launched holding ALT to reset preferences
8. Restarted my PC multiple times throughout all of it
9. Deleted any unused camera devices in device manager to see if it was crashing Premiere
10. Made sure all Adobe services were not disabled/corrupted and able to run properly alongside Premiere
11. Made sure PC isn't overheating, malfunctioning/ect
12. Uninstalled and reinstalled all video codec-related software
13. Ensured hosts file wasn't messing anything up
14. Enabled/disabled various settings driver-side with NVIDIA control panel for Premiere
15. Disabled NVIDIA overlay, image scaling enhancements, ect
16. Manually deleted all folders, settings, preferences, presets, VSTs and anything custom I use within Premiere
The ONLY things I have not done is refresh/reinstall windows and clear/edit the registry, because I have a lot of software installed that I cannot afford to just have to go through and reinstall/reactivate/ect. I can't seem to find any info on this whatsoever online, so.. if anyone knows anything, please please please help. This has been driving me mad. I can edit and work around this, but I am limited because of it and it is rather annoying.
Thank you for your time/patience!

They don't care. I also got the same error. When clicking on the "preferences" setting option, both Ae and pre are not responding. The only thing is you download the studio driver 522.30 Then it will fix this problem.
@Lee28513859g2cu We do care though. In this case, I never saw a way to make it happen myself and it sounded like there is already a fix available to customers, which is to try the latest Nvidia studio driver. Which I beleive is:
