Oneof the incidents that quickly springs to mind is from an evening late last year. I was taking Tiger on his regular evening walks when I decided to venture into the forest that borders the park. Tiger was very grateful for this treat for I normally kept him on a short leash and rarely let him venture anywhere near the woods.
Judging by the yelps from the dog and the regular jumping up and down, I could tell that Tiger was enjoying this outdoor experience very much. Since I still had the leash on him, I decided to release him from this so that he could enjoy himself even more. No sooner had I unclipped the chain than the dog sprung off into a well concealed path that I had not noticed before. I called out for the dog to come back to me but my calls went unheeded.
Now this was an unlikely behavior since Tiger was a well trained dog and he would never disobey my commands. For some minutes, I stood still contemplating whether to rush after my dog or to leave him to himself. After deliberating for a while, I decided to follow after him although I made a mental note to punish the dog for being disobedient.
Having decided that, I sprinted off in the direction that Tiger had taken and after about ten minutes, I made out the Pit Bull moving in a slow and deliberate manner towards an opening. I assumed that his movement was in an effort for stealth and so I followed his example and gently moved forward and at last I could see what was making Tiger so cautious.
Below us lay two log cabin houses that had definitely seen better days. However, that was not what fascinated me. It was the young couple who were trussed against a tree outside the cabins that caught my attention. Before I had time to make sense of what I was seeing, a menacing looking lanky man came out wielding a sharp dagger.
It was then that I realized that Tiger had just uncovered a kidnapping incident. The lanky man got to the couple and after a short exchange, the tied down woman cried out in what I could only assume was pain. Tiger barred his great teeth and I had no doubt that he was willing to run off and fight the enemy to the death if I commanded him to do so. However, I decided that it would be better if we informed the authorities.
As luck would have it, I had left my cell phone at home and therefore had no means of communicating to the police. One look at Tiger and I knew that we were not going to leave the hapless couple to the mercies of the scary man. I therefore signaled for Tiger to distract the kidnaper while I made attempts to free the couple.
We got to the park safely and after taking my contacts amidst copious thanks, the couple went to report the matter to the police. Tiger and I made our way to our home and on our way, we received curious looks from people who were wondering about our worn out looks. I smiled back and thought to myself that they would never have imagined the adventure that my heroic dog Tiger and I had just had.

In recent times, it happens more and more often to take my children to the most isolated places possible, so as not to have the constant anxiety of having to save them from imminent dangers, fatal falls or irretrievable consequences. In isolated places there are no people, and where there are no people, recently, there are no imminent dangers, no fatal falls. It goes without saying that the above anxiety is not my thing, but a feeling of unease due to the panic situations faced by people for some time now.
All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots.

Sarah Hurt is the Director of Camp DeSoto. She grew up playing in the woods of Lookout Mountain, swimming in Little River, and spending her summers as a DeSoto camper. She loves good stories, twinkle lights, her dog Riley, and Camp DeSoto girls most of all.
I think part of the misunderstanding is that when Disney California Adventure first opened it was indeed aimed at adults, but that was unpopular so the whole thing was overhauled, and things have significantly changed since then with loads more kid-friendly attractions.
The whole place is themed as a romanticized version of California, exploring different places and periods in history through the lens of Disney and Pixar stories. One of the highlights is Pixar Pier, inspired by Victorian boardwalks and filled with Pixar-themed rides. But my absolute favourite area was Cars Land, which puts you right into Radiator Springs in a brilliantly immersive land. Avengers Campus is the newest addition and will be a big hit with any superhero fans.
You could work your way around the lands methodically one by one, but wait times mean it might sometimes be a better option to jump between different lands on other sides of the park (more on how to plan out your day later).
Be aware that the ones available for hire have no cushioning like a normal stroller, so you could bring something like a cushion/blanket to make it more cosy. We brought our usual stroller with us and put both boys in it when they were tired.
You can upgrade your Disney California Adventure ticket by using Genie+, a paid service (around $25 per person) that grants you access to the fast lane (lightening lane) on a handful of attractions. We did this and I definitely recommend using it as it saved us a lot of time and waiting around.
You use Genie+ through the Disneyland app. In the list of rides, it tells you when the next lightening lane slot is available. For some rides, this will be immediately, while for more popular ones, you may have to wait much longer.
As we said earlier, we went on Web Slingers first and then wandered into Cars Land and did some of the smaller rides there. The lines were pretty short for everything in the first hour and we managed to ride quite a few things.
Remember that guests staying in the official Disney hotels are allowed to enter 30 minutes earlier than everyone else, so some queues do start to build from then. We found there were fewer lines overall in Disney California Adventure than Disneyland.
Toy Story Midway Mania is so much fun and we loved it as much as the kids. The fairly fast paced ride journeys and spins through scenes from Toy Story. And best of all, every rider can use their own action launcher to shoot virtual darts at targets along the way. It really is great fun, and also somewhat addictive as it makes you want to keep riding and beat your score each time.
One of the things our kids loved most at Disney California Adventure was meeting some of their favourite characters. There tend to be different characters at DCA to Disneyland, although you will find Mickey Mouse in both parks.
Often touted as a toddler favourite at Disney California Adventure, Turtle Talk with Crush is a cool attraction where you can interact live with the sea turtle from Finding Nemo. Guests sit beside an aquarium screen as he swims around and answers questions from the audience. The tech is pretty cool and kids and adults alike love it. The show last 15 minutes.
The Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is a fantastic adventure playground with a focus on natural adventures like rock climbing, a natural rock slide and the chance to meet your spirit animal in the spirit cave! It has lots of shaded areas, and we even bumped into Chip and Dale while there! Most of it has no age or height restrictions aside from:
