hey guys just a quick one

how come when there is no events on and the lake is free for sunday racing we only use half the lake ??? we had near 30 boats out sunday with a northerly breeze the race team decide to put the windward mark under the wall at the club house end and then leeward mark half way up the lake ?
surly we should be making full use of the water we have ,so they could of pulled the windward mark away from the wall to  save us sailing in shifty wind and moved the whole course up the lake also making it bigger
very frustrating as its no very often we get the whole lake to our selfs

I agree totally with Jay, very frustrating and ruined what should have been a perfect mornings sail with good weather and pretty good wind.

The windward mark was practically in the club house and as a result we were sailing amongst the windsurfers, the course was far  too short for no apparent reason other than maybe the RO wanted to get it over and done with and go home as quick as possible.

Perhaps the club need more say in the courses that are set or provide a professional RO team ?

Just to defend the race team on Sunday, the rostered RO did not arrive (I don't know why or the details) and the race team who ran the racing were volunteers who stood in on the morning. I know one of the team only turned up to shadow the patrol boat and get practice and was not an RO or ARO.

I understand your fundamental argument however in this case it is slightly unfortunate. We are making changes to improve the rostering so we do not have a repeat of the weekend and we will always have a RO on a Sunday and Wednesday night.

However I will take an action to see if we can improve the race officers who may be setting shorter courses when there is no need to as in the case Sunday.

Remember Barts Bash and the fleet champs this weekend and your Commodore is the RO so we should have 4 great races:-)

See you Sunday

Whilst I've not sailed at Datchet for a while actually I think both cases have a point. Sailing courses at the other end of the lake is terrible for any family or spectators, and a waste of a big lake. The racing should definitely have a mark near the clubhouse, windsurfers or not. Sailing is not a great spectator sport at the best of times. Enticing others through spectating is fundamental. However when the conditions dictate it is great fun sailing big distances across the best piece of water in london, so use the full lake.
As for those who complain of wind shifts near the clubhouse, that's just always a problem of inland water sailing!
