An informal meeting of helms and crews of Fireballs and Wayfarers took
place on Sunday 15th October and after some discussion the following
proposals were put forward:

• A change of name for start 3 from menagerie to symmetrical fleet

• The reconfiguration of the notice board in the club house to reflect
the starts

• A trial period of alternative courses, other than the typical
triangle sausage format, possibly one Sunday per month.

• The consideration of reducing the number of starts; by combining
start 1 with start 3.

This post is to publicise the proposals to encourage feedback/comments
and to air any objections from (a) other start 3 sailors regarding the
fleet name change and (b) start 1 and 3 sailors on the amalgamation of
starts and alternative course trial.

It should be emphasised that these proposals were made by some start
3 competitors and not by any of the club officials.

The rationale for these proposals is to promote the interests of the
boats sailed on start 3, to provide more varied and interesting
courses and to promote competition/racing for the existing boats which
sail on start 1 & 3.

Hello Tony

I have had discussions with various members over the past few months
about ways of making the racing more varied the question I have posed is,
why do we have to do triangle sausage courses (Olympic courses), small
inland lake and coastal clubs often use fixed marks and set a course
accordingly, Wednesday evenings with the varied courses is very popular.
Some boats i.e. 49ers struggle to do broad reaches I don't know what
the situation is with the cats, also we are hoping to have a fair number of
visitors for the winter series if we change things they should be made
aware.
One suggestion is to have a pursuit race once a month I have to say
I enjoy these.
These ideas are mine and not endorsed by any club official, if
nothing else it could get people talking to each other and members from
other classes than their own, this has to be a good thing,

Lets have your ideas,

John Bashford.

If you call it the symmetric fleet where do all the non-symmetric boats from the menagerie fleet start? Surely this will make visiting contenders etc. feel like they've been put into start 3 because there's no other place for them?

How about a sunday afternoon pursuit race once a month to avoid confusion?

Does anyone know if we are going to run the Purple "or otherwise sponsored" pursuit race weekend after the success of last year? Now is the time to start thinking about it and getting it publicised so we get a few more visitors!

Any one else got any thoughts?

Bob,

Sounds like a great idea to get as many people on the line as possible.

All I would say is that I hope the youth start continues at the same time as the adults because the youngsters were getting very cold waiting on their old start time and hopefully they can learn/ be encouraged by the other sailors.

However, I thought it was a bit rough though last year when one of the Topper squad sailors blocked out some adult lasers on one race with in the rules.  Keeps us awake and ready for the opens I say.

All the best.

Regards, Kevin Druce.

Like the idea of a pursuit race once a month but we have to be a little careful with the cats start times as the cats can end up with very little racing time, I think I started ( and this is from memory ) some 1 hour or so behind the first start on a two hour race. Perhaps we could set up a club handicap rating for this purpose based on Wednesday evening results rather than using the PY conversion which just seems so wrong at times. Wouldn’t be that difficult to do as we don’t have that many different type of boats.

Hi Bob / Tony

I think the option of a pursuit race once a month sounds very positive.
We would defiantly be up for this providing we had long enough reaches etc.

I agree the notice board at the club does require a little attention!
It currently caters very well for the RS boats.
It would be nice to see some inclusion of other classes, whether this to be under one fleet name such as symmetrical or Fast / Slow handicap will require further input, but a change of mindset is defiantly needed here.

We don't currently have a complete fleet of one class on start three, so to combine the classes into one fleet sounds like a good move.

It would be good to hear from the other start three boats to get their opinion.

Regards

Glenn

Hi All,

So:

What's the best name for start 3. One that does not upset someone else
but includes all the boats on the start.
a) Symmetrical fleet
b) Fast handicap
c) Handicap fleet
d) ???? Suggestions please.
HISC have fast, medium and slow handicap plus dedicated fleets.
Burfield have fast and slow handicap plus dedicated fleets. This
seams to be the normal naming convention for other clubs as well so I
vote for (C) Handicap fleet given the number of boats on this start.

Thoughts on alternative courses say once a month. A pursuit race is an
alternative and should be done more often. What about Wednesday night
style races with odd shapes? Are the race officers willing to do
this for start 3 only? Do people want alternative courses? Do other
fleets want the alternative courses?
I really enjoy the Wednesday evenings and would welcome it on a Sunday
morning.
Large open courses with 3 boats on the start does not do it for me any
more, After the start it is more like a time trail rather that a race.
Boat and buoy interaction and navigation adds to the challenge and fun
of sailing.

Combining start 1 and 3. Lasers fleet - what are your
thoughts? More boats on one start may make for more interesting
racing? Should start 6 (Youths) start on 3 as well? Will the varied
courses suit them?
If the youths started with start 3 on a Wednesday evening course, they
could finish at about the same time?
Do we have any comments from the youth fleet?

I personally believe that I am going 'stale' with the current setup on
Sunday morning and I am looking for change. We do obviously need to
agree the right way forward for all club members so we would welcome
positive discussion on this.
