Hi everyone,

You may remember that work is progressing on internationalization of Dataverse: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/dataverse-community/ZnzW2A5COhI & Issues https://waffle.io/IQSS/dataverse

Soon there will be a configurable option to use DV in multiple languages. Thanks again to Harvard IQSS team, Dataverse EU contributors, Jayanthy Chengan from Scholars Portal, and the Université de Montréal. Working through all of this via Github has been a joy!

We've heard that the IQSS team is very close to a release of the majority of the internationalization functionality in DV 4.10 (along with large file support!), and we are excited to upgrade for our users here in Canada.

Now for all of us that would like to upgrade and get started using this new development, there are still a lot of questions about bug fixes and new feature development, language file and translation hosting and maintenance, including processes, tools, responsibilities, etc. It would be great if we can organize a call for translators and internationalization developers/users of DV in 2019.

I've setup a doodle poll for us to indicate availability to meet and discuss next steps as a community:

Please let us know if you have questions,

Best,
Amber Leahey

Thanks everyone for joining the call last week!

Here is a summary of the discussion:

Attendees: Slava (DANS), Felicity (Ottawa), Marie-Helene (Montreal), Philipp (UoiT), Bikram (SP), Jayanthy (SP), Michael (Harvard), Tania (Harvard), Meghan (SP), Phil (Harvard), Gustavo (Harvard), Amber (SP)

  • Latest release of DV (4.10.1) has most of internationalization Project Phase 1 done, need to maintain/update these language files as new versions of DV are made
  • Dataverse EU project currently storing language files in Dataverse-Docker project https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse-docker/tree/master/dataversedock/dataverse-property-files
  • Still need to account for different DV versions in this space (currently tracking language, locale, bundle name)
  • Tools being considered for tracking changes between versions in bundle files (weblate.org/en - using in Dataverse EU project, open source, demo site, SDL.com  - licensed / $$)
  • Group to setup new repository for DV language files (Amber to send Jon, Danny, Gustavo e-mail)
    • Store language packages
    • Track versions
    • Assign translators + permissions
    • Community maintained + owned
  • Update language files workflow being considered >  whenever a new Harvard release is made via Github > latest changes are tracked and identified using tools (see above) > new issues are created for language files and assigned to designated translator > translator adds new translations and makes a pull request > new repository admin accepts the changes and merges
  • Mention that translation could wait until after a new release, otherwise risk slowing releases down (OJS model referred to as slow)
  • Could provide instructions in this new repo and on separate meetings with translators
  • Slava can add Felicity & Marie-Helene to their existing translators list and share with group
  • Currently almost at 10 languages / translations to be maintained moving forward
  • Once space is setup, we will all populate with latest versions language files (if available)
  • Could include localized custom metadata blocks or controlled vocabularies in this repo, but they would have to be labelled as external to be clear
  • Could create guides to how to translate metadata see this one http://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.10.1/admin/metadatacustomization.html#id7
To do: Setup new repo
To do: Test tools for comparing versions of DV language files
To do: Organize list of translators and invite to contribute to repo / Internationalization files maintenance
To do: Discuss phase 2 dev issues on next call

Best,
Amber
