Dear all,

I want to know he best practice for assigning the relationType in the metadata schema for related publication.

Also I want to know which metadata is the correct when describing a dataset that serves as Replication data for a specific publication.  In many cases, the publication does not explicitly cite or mention the dataset, but the dataset was created with the purpose of allowing replication of the results presented in the article.

Given the six options available under the relationType field:

  • IsCitedBy
  • Cites
  • IsReferencedBy
  • References
  • IsSupplementTo
  • IsSupplementedBy

Which one would you recommend for this type of relationship?

If the article and data are published around the same time, and the article lists the dataset's DOI, use:
  • IsCitedBy
If the article does not include the link to the dataset doi and or it was published before the data or does not mention the data, you might want to use:
  • IsSupplementTo
both of these will be included as a citation for the data if you use DataCite's API via Dataverse
