Hi Janet (and everyone),

That's a great question. I think of this Google Group as the official channel for announcements. It has the most subscribers at 1051, as of this writing. It's also a fine place to bring up an idea for discussion.

Zulip is more modern, and while at first blush it looks a bit like a forum, it feels like chat when you're in it. You can see when people are typing. You can reply back and forth quickly. You can send direct messages. We're using Zulip for working groups (#docs, #python, #containers, etc.) and #troubleshooting is a popular channel, where clarifying questions can be asked and answered.

I've been thinking about giving a talk about Zulip at a community call. Would that be of interest? Here are my slides so far (comments are welcome!): https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1s5vbl874YjmWnHYaEkYy2248TtfRarVfOCmeYJk1VBI/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks,

Phil

I'm giving a short talk about Zulip on January 21st. All are welcome!

Here are the details: https://www.cscce.org/2025/12/03/cscce-tools-trials-return-in-2026-starting-with-zulip/

To give a little more context, CSCCE is the Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement and this talk will include five speakers from various organizations (including Bioconductor and OpenRefine) who all use Zulip.

The plan is for me to talk first and give an introduction to Zulip. Here are my slides: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Ur09MsRHOIGMvR4ub9bbPW0kiVOILxEwRzLscY5nKjs/edit?usp=sharing

I'm definitely interested in what you all think about Zulip. Please feel free to reply here or leave comments on those slides.

Thanks!

Phil

I also have a thread going about the talk in Zulip, of course. Please see #zulip > CSCCE Tools Trial talk @ 💬
