Hi all,
managing Dataverse projects I'm facing the lack of translations.

Actually to manage translations you have to work on github but this is not really user friendly, I used WEBLATE for OJS and it is great for who manages translation but is not confident with a shell, with commits or push or with .properties files.

The tool is as a service:

If you log-in you'll see some conditions to respect to have a free hosting, I think the only condition that Dataverse doesn't match is that language packages are not hosted in the same repo of the software.

What do you think about implementing the translations in weblate?

Thanks
Alfredo

Yes, I believe we're using Weblate starting from 2017 to keep translations updated for the European community, CESSDA and SSHOC. It's very good tool.

Best,
Slava

It's a bit behind with current translations as SSHOC project was finished one year ago but this service is available for public and everybody can join:

Just let me know and we can arrange access.

Wow!  Can I have an access?

But, is it connected with a Github repo?

Thanks,
Alfredo

Hi all,

I use the Weblate system to translate PKP tools (OJS, OMP, ...) and also some plugins that can be integrated. It's a very easy to use tool, it has many automatic validations and it allows non technical people to translate and collaborate on this process.

So I totally recommend the adoption of this system to translate Dataverse and some additional plugins/tools.

Regards,

José Carvalho

Hi Vyacheslav,
I would also give Weblate another try for managing German language translations of dataverse, could you provide me with an account, but please for the email address: sz...@uni-bonn.de (also in CC of this email)
Thank you!
Cheers
Sergej

Hello everyone,
the Weblate on cessda.eu is a bit old version.
I wonder: are we sure that the software will be updated in the future?
The site also does not allow anyone to register, and it would be difficult to manage a team of even three or four people.
I think asking WebLate for a free account is the best solution the only condition to respect would be to move the language repository into the same IQSS account.
You can look here for list of pre-requisites: https://hosted.weblate.org/hosting/

Thanks,
Alfredo

Alfredo, no worries, we had a meeting to discuss it and Don is working on GDCC Weblate. It's coming soon.

Alfredo,

Could you tell me more about this free hosted account? I ask because the "Basic" hosted weblate plan, which would not meet our needs, costs around $246usd/yr.
An EC2 instance providing Weblate's minimum resource requirements would be about $330usd/yr.
Better hosting plans cost much more: https://weblate.org/en/hosting/#hosted

I am about to stand up a new Weblate instance for the GDCC as Slava said, but I do like the sound of a free (for open source / academic use?) hosted Weblate instance.

Thank you,
Don

Hello Don,
when I log in with my github account to weblate and I go to the page:
https://hosted.weblate.org/hosting/

I see this message:

  • Translated content has to be released under a license approved by OSI or recognized as libre by FSF.
  • All the source code has to be publicly available in a supported version control system.
  • Translations have to be in the same repository as the source code, or under the same project/organization as the source code repository.
  • Using Weblate has been approved by the upstream project.
  • Mention you use Weblate for translations in the README. It’ll attract new translators and also help Weblate to be free for more projects.
  • The project has had active development for at least three months.
  • You will have 14 days to set up your project.
  • Please request project approval once you finish the setup.
  • Unapproved projects will be removed.

Hello,

tl;dr: Not much concrete progress, I'm afraid.

We're currently wending the process of deciding how and where to keep translations for the current Dataverse property bundles, accommodating the still-forming Single Page App JSON translation structure (I imagine we'll still need back-end translations for API endpoints), and leaving open the option for Skosmos.

Thank you,
Don
