Dear Dataverse community,

I have a question regarding file display and the use of the Documentation tag in a dataset.

Is there any option (native or through customisation) to make a file tagged as Documentation — for example, a README file — appear pinned or always displayed at the top of the file list within a dataset?

The idea is that when a README or similar documentation file is tagged as 'Documentation', it is displayed first, allowing users to see it immediately when accessing the dataset.

If this is not currently possible, I would be very interested to know:

  • How other repositories handle this use case, or

  • Whether there are recommended workarounds or best practices to highlight README/documentation files.

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards,

I think the https://guides.dataverse.org/en/latest/installation/config.html#categoryorder can do what you want (developed by/in use at QDR). If you specify an order starting with Documentation, all files with that tag will appear before files with other/no tags, regardless of whether the user sorts by name, date, etc. There is also an option to order by folder, and to allow users to decide whether to turn these on/off (QDR doesn’t use this last one).
