Hi,
I would like to change the favicon file in Dataverse.  I have looked at "../glassfish4/glassfish/domains/domain1/applications/dataverse-4.19/resources/images" and "./image/fav".
I replaced favicon.ico file at  ./image/fav with my new favicon.ico and restart glassfish.  It works only for Chrome and not other browsers.

Regards
Obi

Hi Obi,

I didn't do any testing but from a quick look at the code* I'm seeing this...

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="#{resource['images/fav/apple-touch-icon.png']}"/>
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="#{resource['images/fav/favicon-32x32.png']}"/>
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="16x16" href="#{resource['images/fav/favicon-16x16.png']}"/>

... which means you should probably replace these files:

/usr/local/glassfish4/glassfish/domains/domain1/applications/dataverse-4.19/resources/images/fav/apple-touch-icon.png
/usr/local/glassfish4/glassfish/domains/domain1/applications/dataverse-4.19/resources/images/fav/favicon-32x32.png
/usr/local/glassfish4/glassfish/domains/domain1/applications/dataverse-4.19/resources/images/fav/favicon-16x16.png

Whether or not this works or not, please consider opening an issue called something like "allow favicon to be configurable" at https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues because it sounds like a nice feature to me. :)

Thanks,

Phil

Hi,

I was stumbeling over the same thing last week when setting up the branding for Jülich DATA.

As I am about to open a few Github issues, should I add this to my list as "As a dataverse sysadmin, I would like to have favicon configurable" (just like so many other things for branding are already configurable with a setting...)

Best,
Oliver

There are more files related to the favicon than those point out in Phil's reply. All of these files were generated using RealFaviconGenerator (https://realfavicongenerator.net/), for all the various browsers, platforms and technologies that use various versions and sizes of these files. Any custom branding config options would require installation sysadmin to use this or a similar tool to create all the necessary variations.

The full list of those files are outlined in my comment (https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/5637#issuecomment-474604330) on the GitHub issue that added these files to Dataverse in 4.12.

Inventory of new images other files generated by the RealFaviconGenerator tool to support all the various browsers and platforms:

  • src/main/webapp/resources/images/fav/android-chrome-192x192.png
  • .../images/fav/android-chrome-512x512.png
  • .../images/fav/apple-touch-icon.png
  • .../images/fav/browserconfig.xml
  • .../images/fav/favicon-16x16.png
  • .../images/fav/favicon-32x32.png
  • .../images/fav/favicon.ico
  • .../images/fav/mstile-144x144.png
  • .../images/fav/mstile-150x150.png
  • .../images/fav/mstile-310x150.png
  • .../images/fav/mstile-310x310.png
  • .../images/fav/mstile-70x70.png
  • .../images/fav/safari-pinned-tab.svg
  • .../images/fav/site.webmanifest

...which were link to dataverse-template:

        <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="#{resource['images/fav/apple-touch-icon.png']}"/>
        <link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="#{resource['images/fav/favicon-32x32.png']}"/>
        <link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="16x16" href="#{resource['images/fav/favicon-16x16.png']}"/>
        <link rel="manifest" href="#{resource['images/fav/site.webmanifest']}"/>
        <link rel="mask-icon" href="#{resource['images/fav/safari-pinned-tab.svg']}" color="#da532c"/>
        <meta name="msapplication-TileColor" content="#da532c"/>
        <meta name="theme-color" content="#ffffff"/>

Also added to the dataset pg to support the new og:image meta tag:

  • src/main/webapp/resources/images/dataverse-icon-1200.png
<meta property="og:image" content="#{DatasetPage.dataverseSiteUrl.concat(resource['images/dataverse-icon-1200.png'])}" />

Eventually we will also want to add that new 1200 px version of the favicon to the dataverse and file pgs, when the Open Graph og: meta tags get added to those pages.
