This is a question for Jim, but thought others might like to chime in or at least make use of the answer.

UVa is willing to work on a 3D Viewer. Where do we start? How were the existing previewers (all parts: js & html) developed.

We are willing to contribute, but (I) have no idea where to start.

Thanks, as always!

Hello. I love the idea of the UVa Viewer, will their be a holographic feature?

If that's even a possibility?
I look forward to seeing the results.

Sherry,

I think there’s a preview for some 3D file type being created in the community – Phil probably knows more. I decided to go ahead and create a ‘How To’ wiki page at https://github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium/dataverse-previewers/wiki/How-to-create-a-previewer that describes what you’d need to do to follow the HTML/js template model that I set up. That wiki page also gives a rough outline of how you might create a previewer for the https://3DHOP.net viewer (I just ran across it today and saw that they provide enough documentation to make it a reasonable example).

Hopefully that will give you and others a start. If it’s missing some info, let me know and we can discuss here or I can add more to the wiki page.

Good morning,

I'm working on a 3d viewer.  Where are they stored?  Or should I just edit of of the curl files you have online?  I have a patron with 3d files and I'm trying to set up something for his files.

Thank you,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

You have to "find" a 3D previewer and then make use of it by using Jim's instructions here (using 3DHOP as an example):

Getting a 3D previewer (3DHOP is what my folks want) is on my list for next week.

Jamie,

If you create one that can be available to the community, it would be great to have the curl command required to invoke it added to the list in the readme of the github.com/GlobalDataverseCommunityConsortium/Dataverse-previewers repository. If the previewer itself is just HTML/Javascript, we could also host the previewer itself there with the others so that others can contribute and so that everyone can run it from globaldataversecommunityconsortium.github.io.

Thanks,

Jim

I went to the example but I think some of their links are broken.  Trying to find examples I get a page with 'Doh! I'm sorry, something is wrong... '. So I'm trying to work around that.

Looks like they’ve added a new howto section with more info. I updated the links to point to that instead of the page that was removed.

During the community meeting Kamil Guryn, Bialystok University of Technology demo-ed a really nice looking 3d viewer but that one doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

Yes, his viewer looks great.  I'm trying to do something like that for a patron with 3d, obj files.
