Hi Community:

The Dataverse Project needs to gather use cases and information supporting DDC-CDI standards in  Dataverse: https://ddialliance.org/Specification/ddi-cdi.

If your community is using this standard or is interested in using it, we would like to hear from you as we investigate its usefulness for the Dataverse Community.

Please reach out to me to join our planned meeting.

Cheers,
Sonia

Hi Sonia, we are not using DDI-CDI, but it is very intriguing, if this was supported as a Dataverse Metadata Export format, it's possible it would be very helpful to those seeking to provide cross-domain discovery in the future.
I just wanted to point out that CDIF is a related initiative  WorldFAIR (D2.3) Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework (CDIF) (Report Synthesising Recommendations for Disciplines and Cross-Disciplinary Research Areas) (zenodo.org)
I think this reuses DDI-CDI standard elements, and has many other standards involved from across disciplines - others in the community will know more.
The use cases listed for CDIF cover:
1) Cross-domain discovery of data (which seems relevant to Dataverse)
2) Data access, specifically machine actionable descriptions of access conditions, controls, and permitted use (also useful for Dataverse, but CC licenses are already standardized, this would be mainly enhanced for non-CC licensed data I presume and could support larger standardization efforts for data access metadata more generally which is welcomed especially as we delve into ways Dataverse can help us better support restricted, licensed, and sensitive data).
3) Controlled vocabularies (perhaps this can implement some controlled vocabularies that are widely used or alternative ways to implement CVs in Dataverse using DDI-CDI (for cross-domain discovery and interoperability CVs seem to be very important)
4) Data Integration (structural and semantic aspects of data to make it integration-ready)
5) Universals (the description of ‘universal’ elements, time, geography, and units of measurement)

Some of these are directly a result of advancements and consensus building in the metadata standards community and the shift towards these supra-frameworks support cross-domain use cases, data science, and other applications of AI and ML. It also aims to improve shortfalls in existing standards by promoting standardization and consistency across standards which we know there are so many.

At Scholars Portal / Borealis, we are thinking about building a centralized catalogue for data repositories we host for example, and we currently support multiple metadata standards including DDI (Dataverse) and ISO 19115, and bringing these standards together in a single catalogue requires us to think about the mapping between standards, the use of new standards that map between both, and also new approaches to applying controlled vocabularies to support cross-standard/domain discovery.

hi Sonia and Amber,
Same, we don't have any projects at the moment, but I think there is value in further investigation.  I will look at projects I'm working on and whether there are any opportunities for use cases.

Hello Sonia,

We are not currently using the DDC-CDI, but would be interested in its support in the Datverse.

Best wishes,

Hi Sonia, all,

Similar to the previous responses, at DataverseNO we aren't currently using DDI-CDI, but are also interested in joining a discussion on its implementation in Dataverse.

I also would like to support what Amber wrote about CDIF and pointing to a recent webinar about the final delivery of the EU-funded project WorldFAIR and their vision of how to continue their work as WorldFAIR+. The relation between DDI-CDI and CDIF is outlined starting at 17:00 in the webinar recording.

To me, CDIF (including DDI-CDI) seems to have the potential to become a robust and flexible interoperability framework. By combining CDIF support with the more domain-specific support as e.g. provided by DANS Data Stations and planned through initiatives such as SIOS support in generalist repositories using Dataverse, I envision we could offer to our Designated Communities the best from both sides, 1) strong cross-domain support and 2) more granular domain-specific support.

By the way, one of the core team members of WorldFAIR, Arofan Gregory, attended the Dataverse Community Meeting 2024.

I also would like to challenge the CDIF folks and the folks working on the Metadata  Schema  and  Crosswalk Registry (MSCR) in the EU project FAIRCORE4EOSC on the relation between the two frameworks. Could CDIF serve as a/the common ground for mappings between different metadata standards?

Best,
Philipp

hi Philipp,
Thanks for outlining these initiatives in relation to the Dataverse community.  I haven't looked into DDI-CDI for at least 4 years (I think pre covid), but did briefly look at the CDIF outline a few months ago.  I will watch the webinar you listed to try to catch up, and agree with you that it seems appropriate to consider the 'relation between the two frameworks' and potential common ground, as you suggested.

I'm focussed on completing our CTS submission at the moment, and then on  leave for 3 weeks in September but definitely keen to be involved, and pleased to see where Sonia's post has gone already!

Janet

Hello everyone,
I am currently working on a project to make Dataverse's DDI-XML exports compatible with a valid version for the CESSDA Data Catalogue.
We are still in a very early stage, and for now, I have only developed an existing script.
I’m not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, as the topic is quite new to me as well, but I’m happy to share my experience if it can be of help.

Alfredo

Hmm, I think this thread is a bit more about DDI-CDI specifically, but please feel free to share your script or any thoughts in a new thread, Alfredo.
