Hello everyone,

we would like to start an open-access / free-to-publish journal using OJS version 3.2.1.1(which should be soon updated to v3.2.1.2). We would like to include the dataverse plugin (which seems to be compatible up to version OJS 2.4.8). However, the systems hangs up when loading the plugin. Is there anyone who can help or give a hint please?

Best regards,
Holger

Hi,

OJS 2.x plug-ins usually do not run under OJS 3.x without adaptation.

As far as I know, the plugin is quite outdated. It probably also no longer fits DataVerse versions 4.x or 5.x.

Leonhard is right. OJS's Dataverse plugin doesn't work with OJS 3.x. The Dataverse and PKP communities have talked about updating the plugin; there's some discussion in their forum, https://forum.pkp.sfu.ca/t/dataverse-plugin-for-ojs-3-x/53495/4, and in their GitHub repo, https://github.com/pkp/pkp-lib/issues/1822. During the last discussions I'm aware of about updating the plugin, there were questions about who could do the work and when.

I think it would be helpful if you expressed in their forum or on the GitHub issue your interest in a working Dataverse plugin for newer versions of OJS. Unless you have already!

Julian is also right. There was some discussion around this updating the OJS plugin for Dataverse 4+ around this time last year. We had a few calls and a Slack channel. A document called "Dataverse OJS 3 Plugin Specification" was put together: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18qv_vgbOGAsnnNlvKA3raDq2WcgjjuQekkgHQvjuZNU/edit?usp=sharing

Ultimately, what's needed is some PHP hackers to work on this (OJS is written in PHP) and the necessary coordination. For more details, here's a thread from about a year ago to read through: https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/d_8aZnav4KE/m/U_qUSXUzAAAJ

I hope this helps,

Phil

I might add here that DataverseNO has applied for a grant to upgrade its infrastructure. In one of the work packages, called "Data Peer Review", partner institutions within the DataverseNO consortium together with international partners (Harvard, Language Science Press, PKP, SciELO, and UNC) are planning to upgrade the Dataverse-OJS integration. Unfortunately, we won't know whether we get this grant before October/November.

Best, Philipp

Forwarding an email the OJS team is sending out to listservs asking for feedback from the community, particularly from journals and publishers, about how to "identify development priorities for Open Journal Systems". Really cool stuff they're working on, though I don't see updates to the Dataverse plugin. Maybe journal editors and publishers in our community can leave feedback :)

**With apologies for cross posting. Sharing the following message on behalf of the Public Knowledge Project's (PKP) Technical Committee.**

Greetings,

Are you a journal or publisher using Open Journal Systems (OJS)? If yes, the Public Knowledge Project's (PKP) Technical Committee<https://pkp.sfu.ca/about/organization/technical-committee/> needs your help!

The PKP Technical Committee has created a survey to help PKP identify development priorities for Open Journal Systems (OJS). All we need is 20 minutes of your time to learn more. If you are a journal editor or manager, or a regular user of the journal management features in OJS, please complete the following survey by March 12, 2021.

https://surveys.publicknowledgeproject.org/16718

If this survey does not apply and/or if you know of others who may be interested, please feel free to forward this email.

Background

The PKP Technical Committee is a community-led committee that provides technical input and advice on PKP's software development priorities.  Like you, we are users of PKP software. In 2020, our committee discussed the need to acquire more feedback about what you - the OJS user community - feel are the most important directions for the software.

For our first survey, we decided to focus on understanding priorities for journal managers and editors. We reviewed and consolidated OJS feature requests from the past two years, including those found on the PKP Community Forum<https://forum.pkp.sfu.ca/> and PKP GitHub repository<https://github.com/pkp/pkp-lib>. Though some of the features identified in this survey are already in progress and/or under consideration per PKP's Roadmap<http://pkp.sfu.ca/roadmap>, we need your help to further prioritize as well as to identify additional needs.

We hope this will be the first of many opportunities to engage more directly with you about your priorities. Your participation will help not only provide invaluable input to the PKP team, it will also support the Technical Committee to fulfill its responsibility to recommend technical directions to PKP and the PKP Advisory Committee.

If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Sonya Betz, PKP Technical Committee Chair, Sonya Betz, at sonya.betz(@)ualberta.ca. You can also find more information in this Q&A on the PKP blog<https://pkp.sfu.ca/2021/02/10/ojs-development-priorities-survey/>.

With thanks,
The PKP Technical Committee
