Hello,

What's the best way to inform the user on the Dataverse UI that DOI has been removed?

Regards,
Yue

Hi Yue,

Hmmm, could you write more about why the DOI's been removed? It's not clear to me what removed means here, but that might help us think of the best options.

Hi Julian,

Very occasionally we need to remove the registered DOI from DataCite due to the mistakes. See the attachment as an example. If the user has already booked the url that contains DOI, when the user click the url, it will display "Page Not Found". I am wondering where I can change to give the user friendly message.

Thank you,

Yue

Your  example shows a file DOI. For one thing, you may want to reconsider issuing DOIs for files. UVa and others have turned this off. I think in later versions this is turned off by default:

Are you talking about removing file DOIs? If so, Julian or Phil or another IQSS person needs to answer.

If you are talking about a dataset, just deacessioning a dataset, will create a tombstone page. no removal is necessary from Datacite. See this DOI:
I am not sure about file DOIs.

Hi Sherry,

It's very helpful! My question is related with tombstone page. Your link https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/8KN41O is redirected to https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/8KN41O
I assume  https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/8KN41O is located on Datacite server, https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/8KN41O is located on Harvard server. Is that correct? If so where did these two links set redirecting together?
I saw Best Practices for Tombstone Pages (datacite.org) instructs about tombstone page, which server tombstone page should live?

Many thanks!
Yue

Hi Yue,

The DOI (the original DOI - https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/8KN41O) was linked to (redirected, if you wish) the Harvard URL - https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/8KN41O was created when the dataset was originally published. That relationship never changed, from Datacite - DOI URL, to Harvard's URL.

The Dataverse software (on deaccessioning) creates the tombstone page at the original Harvard URL. Even though the page looks different - it is now a tombstone page - the URL stayed the same. Note: The tombstone page is for a "Dataset".

The original DOI URL, which goes to DataCite, is resolved back to Harvard, the way it always did, same URL. But that Harvard URL now has tombstone content on it.

As I said, the Dataverse software takes care of creating the tombstone page in such a way that redirecting to a new URL (from Datacite) is not necessary.

Hi Sherry,

I see. I am new in Dataverse and learning while I am working on. The terms and concepts in your answers are very helpful for me to understand Dataverse.

We have the original simple tombstone page at our url:  e.g. https://dataverse.yale.edu/citation?persistentId=doi:10.60600/YU/GQ5IZM, looks like this (see attachment). I'd like to make some changes. Where is this original tombstone page in general when Dataverse software created it originally? I couldn't find it.

Many thanks!
Yue

Yue,

Maybe a question I should have asked at the beginning: Was this dataset published? Or was this dataset still draft when it was deleted?

The image you attached is not a tombstone page, just a page that says that URL doesn't exist.

When a dataset is created it gets a DOI. BUT the DOI is only known to your dataverse repo, it has not been sent to DataCite and registered. Only when a dataset is published does that DOI get sent to DataCite and is registered as a published DOI.

When these published datasets are deaccessioned; they get a tombstone page.

I hope this helps.

Hi Sherry,

Thank you very much for the reply! It's very useful. I will check with our stakeholder to understand the DOI status.

Best,
Yue
