As I mentioned today on the community call, sadly, Binder seems to be having a bit of trouble the last couple weeks:

For the uninitiated, Dataverse installations can enable a Binder button on the dataset page. Then, from the Binder interface, you have your data and code ready to play with. Here's a bit more about Binder: https://groups.google.com/g/dataverse-community/c/yl31eO-uHUA/m/h0JSC0vWAQAJ

From the blog post above, "You can help us keep mybinder.org running by donating to Binder or encouraging your organization to join the BinderHub Federation."

Thanks,

Phil

Hi Phil, we are testing enabling Binder and noticed some issues with Binder integration see Harvard example:   Analysis of Very Large Array data toward FRB 121102 - Harvard Dataverse

Our questions are:
1) Is this integration meant to support any dataset with code/syntax/notebooks? What file formats are required if any? and
2) With these Binder sustainability issues, is there a way to enable this currently to see it working? Is Binder hosted at mybinder.org only? Or are there other services available that can do this?

Thanks in advance!
Amber (on behalf of the Borealis team)

Hi Amber,

Yes! Any dataset is supported. Binder will simply download whatever files are in the dataset. If there's no code in the dataset, the person looking at the dataset in Binder could write some there in Binder.

I would suggest trying some of your datasets at https://mybinder.org . First, flip the dropdown to "Dataverse DOI" and then enter the DOI without the "doi:" (as the example shows). A URL will be created like https://mybinder.org/v2/dataverse/10.7910/DVN/TJCLKP . The external tool simply opens this URL in a new browser tab.

It's possible to install and host Binder yourself. That software is called BinderHub: https://binderhub.readthedocs.io

Yes, there are other services that do something similar. You could try Whole Tale, which also can be enabled as an external tool: https://guides.dataverse.org/en/5.13/admin/integrations.html#whole-tale

Renku (also listed under "integrations") can import datasets but last I checked they don't have a web interface that can accept DOIs the way Binder or Whole Tale do.

I hope this helps!

Phil

Thanks for the additional details about Binder integration, Phil!

Unfortunately I just can't get the Binder button to work from the DV interface, but I could be missing something. I've been trying some of the Harvard Dataverse datasets but no luck! Maybe Binder is already down?

In the meantime we will try Whole Tale, great to see this is in 5.13 (which Borealis just upgraded to today!! yippee)

Right, that dataset translates to https://mybinder.org/v2/dataverse/10.7910/DVN/ZKESD4 and currently I'm getting the error "Too many users on this BinderHub! Try again soon."

I assume this is due to the capacity reduction I linked to at the top of this thread: https://discourse.jupyter.org/t/mybinder-org-reducing-capacity-unstable/19163

It's a bummer. I really like Binder!

By the way, I started a conversation with a friend at Renku about if it could be an alternative: https://archive.matrix.org/r/SwissDataScienceCenter_renku:gitter.im/date/2023/05/24

Hey all,

I've been doing spot checks of mybinder.og over the past couple weeks and it seems healthy again. If you disagree, please let me know!

Good job, Binder team!

Thanks,

Phil
