Dear Dataverse Community,

our hosting organisation asked me to prepare an overview of how Dataverse relates to the FAIR principles for research data (corresponding to what Zenodo has published on their homepage: https://about.zenodo.org/principles/).

Based on Mercè's wonderful presentation at the community meeting in 2020, I've prepared a draft that I would like to share, since it might be useful for others as well: https://docs.google.com/document/d/176B36Ja947_JTquWY9gW9wPjCF3Mvb5okuS88bd3TeY/edit?usp=sharing

I think that some of the principles leave some room for interpretation, so I'd be happy to receive comments. Also, please let know if you have references to other relevant documents.

Regards,
Falco

Wow, Falco, this looks great, and it's perfectly aligned with our desire to someday add a proper write up to the Dataverse guides about how Dataverse supports FAIR principles. I'll go leave a comment on https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/9743 about this email thread and your new doc.

Maybe we can collect comments and feedback in the doc, this thread, and the GitHub issue and then someone (you, if you like!) can make a pull request to add the content to the guides.

Once the content on FAIR is in the guides, we can link to it from https://dataverse.org/software-features (like we do for all other features).

Thanks,

Phil

p.s. I wasn't aware of that 2020 talk by Merce. Thanks for the link! For FAIR, the "software features" page used to link to her 2019 slides at https://scholar.harvard.edu/mercecrosas/presentations/fair-guiding-principles-implementation-dataverse . Recently we switched the link to Katie Mika's September 2023 "Introduction to Data Management & FAIR Data" talk at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X19ne3S8Axo

Thanks for sharing this, Falco. Maybe my 2020 article can also be of help here:

DataverseNO: A National, Generic Repository and its Contribution to the Increased FAIRness of Data from the Long Tail of Research

In particular section 5.

Best, Philipp
