Dear Dataverse community,

In the Dataverse user guide there is a paragraph about "Downloading a Dataverse File Package via URL" (https://guides.dataverse.org/en/5.13/user/find-use-data.html#downloading-via-url). We are not sure what is this Dataverse File Package means. Some API manuals mention an upload mechanism with a given mime-type (application/vnd.dataverse.file-package), that might be it, but we don't know how to create such files and had not found any examples in the public running Dataverse installations for files with such mime-types. I would appreciate if someone could show me an example where this user interface interaction, which is described in the guide can be seen.

Best regards,
Zoltan Toth

Hi Zoltán,

The history on this is that there was a group from Harvard Medical School using Dataverse with use cases that involved only wanting an entire set of files (360 images, one for each degree, for example) so we came up with the concept of a "package" file for this.

Last I heard, those folks are no longer using Dataverse and the rsync/package feature never really took off. We're evening considering deprecating it: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/8985

As for your question, you can get a sense of how the feature looked (how you could download the package via rsync) here: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/3998#issuecomment-319497464

I hope this helps,

Phil

p.s. If anyone out there is using the rsync feature, please reply or comment on that issue 8985 above. Thanks.

Hi Phil,

Thanks,  your answer cleared our confusions. It might be a good idea to note this deprecation plan in the user guide, too.

Best regards,
Zoltan
