Dear Dataverse Community,

I have been searching through past conversations hoping to learn more about using Dataverse as a data catalog (i.e. metadata only records). Have any institutions successfully done so? Has the ability to create records without minting a DOI been solved?

We explored the NYU Data Catalog but found too many security risks with the out of date software. We are also considering using our Digital Commons IR for this purpose.

Would love to hear your experiences!

Thank you,

Hi Jess,

Looking through the Dataverse documentation, looks like there is a new PermaLink option, just for catalogs.

"PermaLinks are a simple PID option intended for intranet and catalog use cases. "

I haven't tried it but it sounds very useful. And with the recent version of the Dataverse software your local installation can have multiple PIDs.

Best,
Sherry Lake

Yes, PermaLinks are a fine option. They're free and are just based on your DNS.

Another option that is cheaper than DOIs is Handles, which are also covered under the docs Sherry mentioned: https://guides.dataverse.org/en/6.2/installation/config.html#persistent-identifiers-and-publishing-datasets

There's nothing wrong with assigning a DOI to a metadata-only record, of course. I assume the hesitation is that DOIs cost money and require setup.

I hope this helps,

Phil

Hey Jess,

We are using Dataverse to store and publish some metadata only datasets. Please take a look: https://csh.nfdi4health.de/ or read about the service here https://www.nfdi4health.de/en/service/health-study-hub.html.

It does not look like Dataverse but it is.

Best regards,

Johannes

HI Jess,

ODISSEI Portal is another repository using Dataverse as a kind of data catalog. It's at https://portal.odissei.nl, and many of its records point to datasets published in other repositories that are using Dataverse.

One more! We (ASU) have a collection that is metadata-only records (other than the data dictionary for the dataset) related to our Research Data Hub that includes Health Research Data datasets. Each dataset has a link to a site where users can download a form to request access to the data.

Oh ASU's collection is very close to what we're hoping to do! Is there someone at your library I could reach out to to discuss further?

Hi Jess, we are actually looking to change this implementation and find a different solution for it. In this case, we just didn't upload any files, and we have links in the metadata to request the data. We actually don't particularly want to host metadata-only datasets in our installation and will likely look for other options to accomplish this.

For your needs, have you looked at the Trusted Remote Store option using the "remote" store type? This feature seems to provide a means for pointing to an alternate storage location for your files while still referencing them in the dataset (but not necessarily providing access there). There are probably several ways to accomplish this .. happy to talk to you more about it.

Hi everyone,
I'm writing because this matter, the possibility to use Dataverse as a data catalog,is of interest to us too.

In the specific, as an internal catalog for researchers that deal with active dataset and need to have access to them. The files could be pointed to the dataset using the Trusted Remote Storage option.
Would this be a viable option?

Thank you very much for your help.

It should work. Please give it a try and let us know how it goes!
