Why doesn't the metadata data "Publication Date" change to reflect re-publishing with the latest (major) version?

In the metadata tab, the original published date is displayed, but when you check the versions, it has a different published date. Here's an example:

The tooltip for "Publication Date" is pretty vague... "The publication date of a dataset".

It would be more accurate if the tooltip said something like "The publication date of the first version of a dataset". Here's the original design doc for dates for 4.0: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DWsEqT8KfheKZmMB3n_VhJpl9nIxiUjai_AIQPAjiyA/edit?usp=sharing . In that doc it says "Publication Date: the date of first release, version 1, from draft to public".

(If anyone simply wants an updated tooltip, please create an issue! It should be easy to do.)

People have been a bit confused about this for years.

It let to the development of the "Set Citation Date Field Type for a Dataset" API endpoint because very often people want the citation to show the date for the latest version (e.g. 2023) rather than date for the first version (e.g. 2017): https://guides.dataverse.org/en/5.13/api/native-api.html#set-citation-date-field-type-for-a-dataset

Just a couple weeks ago a new doc called "publicationDate afterthought and citation" was created by folks from Recherche Data Gouv: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iKurLtDAp5koENXhKiCT9mPkcNSFZsMRMl3EVPLCoD8/edit?usp=sharing

They're proposing some changes. Here's the related GitHub issue: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/9674

I don't know the right time or place to talk about their ideas but we should, sometime!

I hope this helps,

Phil

Agree, this is confusing for folks.
Zenodo and Dryad have different approaches to this , so would be great to update the tooltip in DV to make it clearer, also add the Version date to the citation, and consider these points raised in the  Recherche Data Gouv: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iKurLtDAp5koENXhKiCT9mPkcNSFZsMRMl3EVPLCoD8/edit?usp=sharing
