Dataverses with multiple contributors

We are struggling some with administrating a dataverse with multiple contributors. In our Dataverse Network new users may create their account. But in the Create Account form, or after the account is created successfully, I do not see a natural workflow to let the new user ask for permission to become a contributor in an existing dataverse.

Any tip on how to create a workflow on this?

Hi Leif,

As we are working on Dataverse 4.0 right now, I wanted to respond to you with some information about how having multiple contributors for an existing dataverse could be done in Dataverse 4.0.

One thing we are adding in, is functionality to be able to invite a user and with that invite, you can assign a role (contributor to use your example) so once the invited user creates their account, they will already have the contributor role assigned to them. Does that work for your user case? Do you invite users frequently in 3.6 or is it more of a use case where most accounts are created by the user?

Elizabeth, pardon my late response and thanks for your answer. The invite-option might help us somewhat. 

What we would love to see, is an option in the "Create Account" form to ask for permission to become a contributor in a selected dataverse - e.g. a pull down list of selectable dataverses. Is there any hope that we may see such a functionality in the Dataverse software?

I've created a GitHub Issue (https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/936) for this request. I have it scheduled to be part of 4.1 right now but we will discuss as a team when it can be implemented and if possible, implemented sooner.
