Dataverse Community:

DVwebloader, the tool enabling the “Upload a Folder” functionality for Dataverse instances using S3 storage with direct upload, has a new version 0.3. If you are using DVWebloader, upgrading is recommended.

DVWebloader v0.3 has many improvements:

  • catches any path/name issues with chars not allowed in Dataverse (previously could result in failure after uploads completed)
  • shows an error message in the UI (not just the console) if the last step to call Dataverse fails,
  • adds a configurable 'Max files to upload' limit, allowing very large directories to be uploaded in multiple batches
  • includes buttons to select/deselect all. Select only selects files not yet in the dataset, up to the max number of files specified (all by default),
  • adds progress bars for individual s3 uploads (0-50% is the upload progress while 50-100% is progress in calculating the hash value, so the speed in the first/second half of the bar could be different.)
  • adds a clearer success message with a note and link if a new draft dataset version was created
  • hides the 'Start Upload' button after upload has been done
  • provides a localinstall.sh script to be able to run w/o calling external libraries
  • fixes an intermittent issue when using sha512 hash values
  • provides a downloadable zip for installation

Hi Jim,

What do I need to do to upgrade?  But maybe I don't have to?

Here's what I see (v0.3)?

If you are configured to use the copy at https://gdcc.github.io/dvwebloader, which I’m guessing you are (check the URL you see for the DVWebloader page), you’re ~all set. That said, since this repository isn’t run like the dataverse-previewers one, with fixed versions on github.io, the README recommends:

You should fork or install a local copy for production use (to avoid changes made in this repository immediately being available from your Dataverse installation.) You may also want to run the localinstall.sh script in the directory you download to to make and local copies of the libraries used.

To do that, you can download and unzip the file in the v0.3 release and then redirect via the :WebloaderUrl setting to point to your local copy.

Hello,

Is there a particular version of Dataverse that this is compatible with, or should it work with all versions?  I've been wondering about this for a little while.   I'm assuming if the API calls it uses haven't changed, then it should work with most recent versions?

Thanks!

Bethany,

It’s actively deployed in v6.6 repositories and we usually test against the latest release. My guess is that v0.3 is still compatible back to v5.12 and perhaps earlier as noted in https://github.com/gdcc/dvwebloader/blob/v0.3/README.md.
