I'm watching Péter and Philipp have a nice chat on Twitter (screenshot attached) about getting together to talk about Dataverse in Helsinki.

It gives me a crazy idea...

What if we let each other know about upcoming Dataverse-related events we're attending? Or even speaking at. Or organizing ourselves.

I mean, we kind of do this, sometimes, already. Sherry and others on this list have been really good about saying things like, "Hey, I think we should have a Dataverse panel at this upcoming conference. Who's with me?" It's great to have a heads up. With enough notice, someone might even plan to travel and join in. We should keep doing this.

But we're data people, right? Following my usual pattern, I just created a spreadsheet. It's called "Dataverse Meetups" right now and only has the one event (RDA Finland) Péter and Philipp were tweeting about. I have two events in Europe in early 2020 I'm attending (and hopefully speaking at) that I could add:

What do you think about this idea? I can't possibly maintain this spreadsheet alone. Any maybe there's a better way?

Thanks,

Phil

p.s. I went for the term "meetups" instead of "events" to be less formal that the "official" events listed at https://dataverse.org/events (only Dataverse Community Meetings so far). The idea is that this can be much more "ground up" from the community. But maybe we could link to the spreadsheet (or whatever other solution) from the bottom of that page.

Nice idea! I think you'll have to remind us about consulting and adding to the list regularly :)
Best, Philipp

Great ideia Philip!

This will give people an "heads up" for upcoming Dataverse-related events near their location.
Could You please add the events You are attending in Europe?

Thanks,

I just added a link to the new "Dataverse Meetups" spreadsheet to the bottom of https://dataverse.org/events and tried to make it clear in multiple places (including a new "About" tab on the spreadsheet) that everyone is encouraged to request "edit" access to add events, meetups, and other gatherings where people will be talking about Dataverse.

I also added a column called "Link to announcement on dataverse-community list" because I think it would be a good practice to announce events here on this mailing list. (Philipp did a good job of this with his recent "European Dataverse Workshop 2020" post.)

Again, if you like this idea, please help maintain the spreadsheet by requesting edit access.

There's nothing like getting together in person. I hope this new spreadsheet helps people connect more easily!

Thanks!

Phil

p.s. I did add the two events I'm attending early next year (no word yet on if my talks were accepted): PIDpalooza and FOSDEM.

Great! Thanks, Phil! As for the Bird of Feathers meeting at the RDA plenary in Finland, please note that early-bird registration ends tomorrow, September 24! https://www.rd-alliance.org/rda-14th-plenary-registration

Hope to see many Dataversians at this meeting!

Philipp
