Lately I've been looking for examples of dataverses that host manuscripts. It seems like most of the dataverses on https://dataverse.org/installations are for hosting data that supports manuscripts. Dataverse is also designed to host research papers and other text documents, not just data, right? Does anyone know of institutions where Dataverse is being used as a pre-print server, or even a journal that uses it as a publication platform?

I would say in its current form, no, Dataverse repositories are decidedly not designed for sharing preprints: most notably, all metadata categories in Dataverse are oriented towards data, and all DOI metadata is registered as dataset. There are some lesser issues (e.g., the layout is optimized for multiple files, not for a single paper), but the metadata issue is the biggest one. Because of that, I don't think anyone is actually using DV for preprints et al., no.
That's different from both Invenio (the software run by Zenodo) and DSpace (Dataverse's biggest 'competitors' if you want to think in those terms), both of which can be and are used for both data and documents.

Hi,
I don't believe that the main objective of dataverse be an preprint server, certainly has some advantages like preservation or doi assignment, but exist other opena access software  options like dspace mainly focused on preprint and another type of research outputs like preprints. with many advantages on web visibility

Interesting. Has anyone done a feature comparison of these repository softwares? At the moment I'm specifically wondering what advantages Dataverse has over DSpace.

There have been a few comparisons of “data” repositories. See list below.

DSpace was not developed as a data repository. Yes, “data” files can be put in a DSpace repository, but DSpace was developed for open access articles, pre-prints, ETDs, grey literature materials. The biggest difference is in their original purpose Open Access for traditional “journal-like” materials vs “data”.
