Hi, I installed the last stable release of Dataverse (3.6.2) in my OS X 10.8.
In order to do this, I followed the instruction described in http://thedata.harvard.edu/guides/dataverse-installer-main.html.

Everything seems to work properly; I could create some dataverses and studies. I could upload files as well.
However, when I try to use the REST API (introduced in http://thedata.harvard.edu/guides/dataverse-api-main.html), I always get following response:

HTTP Status 503 - Service Unavailable

I requested, for example, this service: http://localhost/dvn/api/metadataSearchFields.

It might worth to mention that I did not do any change neither in the configuration files nor in the source code.

I’d like to know, that if it is due to some error or if I have to change something in the configuration files.

Thanks,
Jorge

Hi!

I did it. I requested the service http://localhost/dvn/api/metadataSearch/title:democracy in my local DVN instance and the response is again:

HTTP Status 503 - Service Unavailable

The rest of my DVN installation seems to work correctly.

Thanks,
Jorge

Thanks Philip, it works!

How can I activate the HTTP?
Maybe in Glassfish Configurations > Server-Config > HTTP-Server > HTTP-Listeners?

Hi Jorge,

HTTP should be working for the app in general but the particular API you are talking about, which we call the "Data Sharing API", can only be used over HTTPS.

"The API supports basic HTTP Authentication. So that the access credentials are not transmitted in the clear, the API verbs (methods) below are only accessible over HTTPS."

https://github.com/IQSS/dvn/blob/3.6.2/doc/sphinx/source/dataverse-api-main.rst#data-sharing-api

Phil

p.s. Please note that additional APIs are planned for Dataverse 4.0 and http://apitest.dataverse.org is the place where we encourage testing.
