Seeking Dataverse Developer
Background
Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage Program (Recovery) at the University of Houston (UH) is the largest Hispanic/Latino humanities research program operating in the United States dedicated to researching, locating, preserving and making available all literary-historical documents produced by Hispanics/Latinos living in the United States from the Colonial Period to 1980.
Recovery is in the process of creating a customized web-based content repository in Dataverse. The repository will hold Recovery’s vast archives and metadata (file formats include JPG, TIFF, PNG, PDF, CSV, Excel, and Word). It will allow multi level access to the assets and their metadata to a range of audiences, Recovery staff, students, researchers, educators and community members. The assets will be made discoverable through fully searchable metadata and indexing on search engines. The valuable resource will further scholarship and preservation of Latino historical materials (1595 to 1980) through the maintenance, modernization, and consolidation of Recovery archival collections.

Position
Recovery is seeking a developer who can provide customizations and technical support for this effort. This position will implement Dataverse, install software and begin customizations. Customizations to include, but not limited to, developing APIs to accommodate broader search functionalities, bilingual metadata, metadata linking to image files, auto populate features, batch upload features, expanded user roles, and author ownership.
This position is expected to meet with the project team and UH IT to discuss the customizations needed, establish a workflow, and acquire university technology clearance. Additionally, this position will assist in determining the cloud storage service that best suits the project’s needs.
This position will be remote contract work for 2 years.
Required Qualifications
B.S. Computer Science/Computer Engineering or relevant experience in software development and modification
At least 18 months of programming experience
The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following:
Experience working with Humanities data in a university setting
Experience working with multilingual datasets and user experience
Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
Familiarity with research data management systems, databases, and data handling protocols.
Experience developing custom software solutions for digital asset management systems (DAMS)
Experience working with Dataverse or similar platforms
Experience working with cloud storage services such as AWS and Azure
Experience installing, running apps/services in Linux
Knowledge of JavaScript, Payara, PostgreSQL, Solr, and jq
Knowledge of JSON
Knowledge of APIs
