Hello Dataverse community!

Scholars Portal has been working on a new version of the Data Explorer external tool, and we're happy to announce that it's now ready for testing. For those not familiar with the tool, the Data Explorer is an application developed by Scholars Portal that can be used to view more variable-level information about tabular datasets deposited to Dataverse.

The new version of the tool is available in our Scholars Portal demo dataverse instance. The code for the project is available in our GitHub repository.

To try out the tool, you can create a new dataset and then upload tabular files to that dataset (SPSS, CSV, XLSX, STATA, etc.). Once the ingest process is completed, you will see the “Explore” button appear, and in the Explore menu you will see an option for “Data Explorer 2”. The other “Data Explorer” link will take you to the previous version of the tool. You can also test the tool with existing published datasets in the demo environment if they have tabular files.

If you have files in your own instance that you want to test with, you should also be able to test them in the tool by modifying the following URL, replacing the URL and file ID with your own:

https://demodv.scholarsportal.info/ddi_explore2/index.html?fileId=$FILE_ID&dvLocale=en&siteUrl=$DATAVERSE_URL

If you have time to test the tool out, some of the things we would like input from the community on include:

  • How easy is the tool to use and understand?
  • Do the different viewing functions for summary statistics, categories and questions appear as expected?
  • Does the new cross tabulation interface work as expected?
  • Any other bugs you encounter or suggestions you have to enhance the tool

Things that we are still working on in the tool include:

  • Using auto-generated categories for Excel/CSV files for Cross-tabulations (these file types don’t currently work in cross-tabs since these files don’t have categories like SPSS files or other stats files would)

If you don’t have time to test out the tool but would like to see how it looks, you can view a small SPSS testing file in the tool here.

Please send any feedback you have about the tool to the SP team, reply to this thread directly, or report an issue in our GitHub repository. Thanks in advance for testing it out!

Congratulations, Kaitlin and the rest of the Scholars Portal team! Data Explorer 2 looks fantastic. I think it's a great improvement from version 1: it has a clean look,  it is much clearer to view all the information, run cross-tabs, etc. Overall, it enhances the Dataverse experience for tabular data. Nice work!

I will test it more to be able to provide detailed feedback. But for now, I want to congratulate you and encourage the Dataverse community to try it.

Best,
Merce
