Hi there,

I wonder if anybody has experience uploading zip files to Dataverse. We have a user who is trying to upload a zip file (approximately 11 MB) to our Dataverse repository in the unpublished/draft mode, but they basically get stuck in the upload process after waiting for 40 minutes. I wonder if you have any experience with uploading zip files to Dataverse.

Also, can zip files stay intact/compressed after the upload? I was reading this webpage https://guides.dataverse.org/en/4.0/user/dataset-management.html and noted that the compressed files in zip format are unpacked automatically.

Thanks!

Qinqin

Hi Qinqin,

We upload very large zip files into our Dataverse without any issues.

In order to keep zip files intact as a zip, you have to double-zip them, basically zip the zip file.

What are your logs showing when the user is trying to upload the zip file?

Hi Folks,
7zip files also don't get decompressed. No need to double-zip. And 7z is preferred over .tar files for preservation reasons.

Dear Sonia,

Reading your answer about 7z being the preferred format, I am wondering is there any literature/resource that discusses which archival format is "better" for preservation purposes?

Thank you!

Hi Kirill,

Thank you so much for your information! Good to know that you have been able to upload large zip files without problems. I will see if I can locate the logs when the user was trying to upload the zip files.

Hi Sonia,

Great to know about the 7zip files. Thank you for the info! :)

Have a nice day/evening!

Qinqin
