Subject: WD80EZZX-11CSGA0 dead board, can I swap boards? supported?

Model : WDC WD80EZZX-11CSGA0
Serial : VKJADWRX
Firmware : 83.H0A03
Capacity : 8 TB (15 628 053 168)

wd / hitachi 8tb helium drive

dead board

looks like it has a normal rom that I can swap

Bare board shows full id and size

worried it might have ssd

Can the rom be swapped?

swapped board, it started to spin but I shutdown before it could read and screw up ssd.

Is this supported?

Just a thought, can you check is that info might be in the ROM?

fillip from ace says.....

So, first of all it's Hitachi ARM drive (yes, it is).

off topic: https://blog.acelaboratory.com/pc-3000-hdd-a-drive-in-disguise.html <--scroll down

Unfortunately it's not supported by PC-3000. So we can't to get SA access for testing/fixing something.

But if you sure that it's PCB issue - yes you can try to use compatible donor PCB with native ROM.
It's not SSHD, there is no NAND chip on the board.

Re-check all TVS(s) AND fuse(s). In my experience, these are always the problem with the new WD/Hitachi drives that are "dead."

came across this interesting description of how disks are laid out
its about floppy disks
but many concepts apply to hard drives

update

I could not find any differences between the boards.
I removed the roms and read them in
My good donor rom would read and verify
patients rom would get verify errors way out at 70%
put patients rom on good board
it gets BSY but no spin
put donor rom on patients board and it works fine drive reads and writes.

put donor board with patient rom on patients body
spins up
comes ready
but doesnt recal
IDs with wrong serial number (donors...)
says its a security locked disk detecrted
cant read sectors

so patients rom is bad?

now somehow have to try to create a good rom with the good parts of the patient rom and another.

attached the roms
emmas is bad - there are 2 copies
wayne works

if anybody has any ideas on how to dissect a rom....

I have written a tool for parsing the ROMs on Westachi PCBs.

My tool and ROM analysis is available here:

That same thread has voltage test points for several HGST PCBs.

I believe I could repair your damaged ROM, but my first question would be, how are you reading it? Which programmer are you using? I suspect that the programmer may be set for 3.3V ROMs (the ROM is actually a 1.8V device).

I think I misstated my description...
Both boards are good... I think
Patients ROM is flaky toward the end.

Good ROM + on matching drive works fine
Good ROM + patients body does the security locked, no read, no recal.....

The verify error it gets is way out
And is like 0xC8 instead of 0xC0

So maybe the rest is mostly good

My rom reader is is GQ 4 something
It IDs the room as EF5014
My library doesn't have that
So I picked some other similar ROMs like 25q80 ish one s

I also tried reading with mrt rom reader
It won't read 2 copies that match
In fact it has trouble reading regular chips

I tried settting the mrt to 1.8v and it read all zeros
At 3.3 it read something
I tried the slowest speed
Maybe try it with freeze spray...

I need a rom Reader That will read blocks in reverse.
If I could map the rom reader as a device I could use ddrescue...

ISTM that your programmer may have killed the ROM.

I hope it didnt kill the rom

read my good rom the same way - no problems
reinstalled good rom on 'bad' board and it works

the bad board symptom was: no lights, not spin, no id

when i read the rom on the mrt in 3.3v mode I got
