HI

I have this drive  which needed head swap. I have swapped heads and drive initialize normaly with id and no clicking sound (PC3K). But after I have  tried to access data I get "device error (AMN;INF)"  error message. Also I changed USB PCB board with compatible SATA and transfered ROM (by external programmer). but still same error message.
Is there solution for this error and these SMR drives?  ( MQ04UBD200)
Thanks

Thank you for answer.  I will try this. Do you have advice for temperature tu use during soldering because these BIOS chips are weak and easy burn out?
Thanks

It sounds like firmware problem with the translator. Fairly common. Likely you have to clear the g-list/translator to get it working. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

Hi
Thanks for answer. I managed to read by utility and cloning of disk started. :)
I will wait for cloning to be done and try for raw recovery aat least.

Have you checked sector 0 and does it look normal.

Reading by utility with this model quite often reads corrupt data.

I am cloning an mq04 now

I tested utility mode, you cant select "consider glist damage"
I dont think its actually going into utility mode.
The sectors seem to read the same.
The translator is damaged.
The files dont lineup to the MFT.

Not well supported by pc3k
cant read/ edit plist glist

That's odd. PC3K reports the number of G-list entries, but the "G-list.bin" file which it produces is a RAM "artifact", not the real G-list.

Would you mind uploading your resource dump?

here tis

I converted to sata.
I tried various profiles
they all have about the same tools
this is as
MQ04ABF\TOSHIBA MQ04UBB400-JS0B0U06-Y28FT0CYT
choosing other profiles like mq03 will try to decode the glist but its garbage.
I would like to clear the glist.
another funny thing i the count of available CP's varies with different profiles.

clear smart doesnt work.
seems able to turn off smart

G-list.bin is not a real G-list. It consists of 17 x 12-byte records. That's all I know.

1. PC3000 cannot work with SA on this model (properly).
2. MQ04 ALWAYS writes to SA when you power it up.
3. If heads are not original then whatever SA sectors are written will very likely be damaged.
4. Reading MQ04 in the "utility mode" is more or less pointless because of different translation.

The drive's SA is very likely damaged right now and significant part of user data is lost. It is probably still possible to recover part of user data, I think several DR companies can do that if you want to outsource it.

Perhaps one should transfer the head adaptives (microjogs) from donor to patient when doing a head swap? That would prevent the heads from writing to the wrong place.
