I believe WD SMR drives complete a head check as part of the initialization procedure, so I guess switching the head off in ROM gets around this issue.
However I am confused. So you can turn off H9 in the ROM and it continues spinning. Can you not then image the other 9 heads in DE? As you have bent the head you will not get data from that head anyway. Or am I not understanding?
