HI Guys,

I've jot got a MacBook TouchBar A1707 for recovery.
Surprisingly this is the first soldered SSD that i got upto now.
The Mac Will boot up, but wouldn't recognize the internal SSD - am i right to assume that in such a case also the lifeboat port recovery kit wouldn't help?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi ,
I did get a lot of those, check if the ssd enable signal coming is high or low and this signal is coming from cpu it self. Look at the board view and schematic . Most of the time the cpu has problem and shuts off the ssd . Measure the signal and report back to me and I will advise you

Hi Haider, thanks for the info, unfortunately at this stage I do not do any Mac board level reapirs and do not have the setup to test as you advised. I'm trying to go through the process of elimination to see if there is a purpose to purchase the reader kit through the Lifeboat port or the SSD is gone. But since the Mac is booting into recovery mode wouldn't that indicate that the CPU is working fine?

Thanks

what do you get with target disk mode

in recovery mode - if you go into disk utility does it show you a full size drive or just a 2gb recovery volume

sounds like the ssd is there because the 2gb recovery drive is part of the ssd

According to my notes, the Apple Data Recovery Tools will ONLY work with 2016-2017 MacBook PRO 13” and 15” WITH Touchbar. I believe you have a 2016 with touchar. So, it sounds like it may work on this machine (especially since it powers on still). Happy to try it for you if you don't have it ($300 if it works).

Thanks Brian, would love to send it over but I'm in Australia which makes it a bit difficult.
The question is if the Mac is still booting up but can't recognise the SSD, doesn't it mean that the SSD most likely is gone? and even with the reader kit it would fail?

Send it in to a company that works for free like Brian's. Be sure to tell the client you are sending out their data so they know who has access to it so you avoid legal issues.

Thanks Don, but as mentioned that's not an option in this case to send from Australia to the US.

Hard to know if it will work in this case, but it's worked about 80% of the time for me when the computer still turns on.

Hi Brian,I purchased this kit second hand  and tried it on this Mac but it doesn’t work, so I’m trying to assert if the kit is bad or it is the actual SSD that is gone.

I connected the kit but the SSD is not coming up, my concern about the kit is that when I connect everything up, the led on the little black box of the kit does not turning on at all, so not sure if it is supposed to be on in any case, or is it supposed to be on only when data is transferred and it can id the SSD on the faulty Mac?

What is your experience with these cases? Does this led supposed to be on as indication of power anyway? See the attached image for reference.

Also I disconnected only the battery from the mac logic board, do I need to disconnect anything else?

Thanks mate

Anyone have the part number // info for Touch Bar Macs to connect after they have PCB problems...?

(Brian, Nathan actually has this part if you know which it is; it's not as expensive as the 'transfusion' looking one that's attached to this thread) ...

If not, that's okay, I can probably get the info off it later this week.

Hi Truman, the image that you just posted is exactly like the one I've got from the previous picture. Just need to know per my question if the led on the little black box should be on. Cheers

I've never disconnected the battery. Try leaving that connected? Unfortunately, I don't recall if that LED was on or not. When I get in, I can see if it turns on with just power.

I'm not sure what you mean. A different tool than this one we're talking about?

Regarding this photo below, what model is this? I've always seen the other port layout that IT Land posted above. I've never seen this diagonal one.

Thanks Brian, I'll try to leave the battery connected to see if it makes any difference.
If you can connect your kit to see if the led is on that would be much appreciated, just that I'll know if I have some problem with the unit. I'm assuming you need to use a Mac with USB C and the same file system for extraction right? Which I did anyway.
Thanks mate

Mine has no LED.

Use the latest OS to be sure, and yes, USB-C.

Just out of curiosity, did you remove the logic board from the topcase and check the other side of the board under a microscope for evidence of liquid residue or oxidation? I have see a lot of cases over the years where people check in MacBook Pros that are having mysterious problems and have "never had liquid spilled on it" only to find that it had indeed been exposed to liquid. It never hurts to check. ;-)

Also, did you try taking that port replicator out of the equation? I have seen those things cause connection issues at times especially when it has more than one item connected to it.

Hi Fraser, yes, took the motherboard out to inspect it and it was completely clean, so I don't believe it was caused by liquid spillage. Hope you'll staying safe during these dooms day era.
Excuse my ignorance but to which item are you referring as the port replicator? not sure what you meant.
