Hello

How to tell preamp ID from this model please ?

Head 0 will read and write but others are finished.

Drive will come ready and full ID on head 0 but...

Terminal doesn't show normal values so unsure how can match donor heads.

Thanks you.

This gives you the vendor ID and part number (?).

Normally it would tell me what the preamp code is as well.

As far as I know you need to much the middle 4 characters in the part number, then the patient pcb must at least spin up the donor drive, if not then the heads is not compatible to start with. On the pcb is also a sticker that tou need to match

"Forth character in the alphabetic code printed on the label at the rear side of the drive should match"

G84A is the 4 from the part number but I only have G94A in the library, can try the PCB on it and see if it spins.

Not sure about other label numbers to try and to match...

This one has the same PA VID/PN/Rev output in terminal:

If that is a match, then perhaps you can determine which numbers are important by comparing the two HDDs.

One would think that Ace and MRT would be able to advise you. I'm surprised that their clients are left to their own guesswork.

I think the head map would be in the FIPS module in the ROM.

The sticker on the PCB appears to have a YYYYMMDD date code on the second line.

I have one other observation. If you are transferring the ROM to a SATA PCB, you may need to be mindful of the version of the MCU. I seem to recall seeing version numbers in ROM dumps, and I also recall seeing a thread at ACE's forum where someone encountered a no-spin condition after transferring the ROM dump to a donor PCB with a different MCU version. I don't know if the disparity in the versions was the cause of the no-spin problem, but I think it's worth remembering.

Here are two examples:

A HM501II SATA drive is needed for heads and PCB converison. The 640GB capacity model drive will probably also work.

Some available here:

Sorry

No time for reading the whole thread

Preamp type is read in terminal as soon as you power on the drive with insulated spindle contacts

this is pretty known

as far we have seen there isn't any kind of correspondence with none of the numbers in the part number , which is suitable for the resources (just first digits block)

Though PA in those drives are just 2 types :-)

Read your and share it, I'll tell you if you have the "frequent" or the "rare" one

About SATA board, handy, but converting the original one is matter of 10 minutes

I would avoid  transferring the ROM since it is half way between common chip and BGA chips with tin on bottom

Soldering properly such ROMs on Samsung and Toshiba's boards require some practice

Always better trying reading and writing through terminal and or ROM reader/writer with proper clamps (again avoiding resoldering... unless expert enough)
