Hey Gents,

I got in a ZIF drive (60 GB Toshiba - MK6008GAH S/N: X5MI7825SDC 3.3 - today from an 5th gen iPod - its a DJ's (same story we all hear - no backups) and all his music is on it...

First time I used this connector since I never seen but only heard of the drives... I used the PATA connector to ZIf that came in DDI white box. I connected the ribbon cable with the white end and blue end (I was told that the ribbon cable with the two blue ends was for LIF drive).

Symptoms/Behavior of drive:

When I connect the IDE connector and molax power to the ZIF connector and F11 to turn the power on with the DDI4, the red light on the ZIF conversion gadget stays on and the BSY light stays on the DDI.

I connect the ZIF drive to our PC3K and same issue BSY only never DSC DRDY comes available. I am pretty sure we hooked the ZIF up correctly since PC3K says power and PCB is OK it just cant find the SA. I put a stethoscope up to it and listen tho the drives internals and I hear a rat tat tat tat click in that similar pattern.

Since we own multiple DDI's - I have tried all of our connectors ruling them out and the conversion connector is functioning correctly. I will enclose pics to see if you guys see anything wrong...

I assume that they function like normal everyday hard drives (except for the 4KB sector size I read on the net) but i should be able to hook up to the adapter and start imaging as long as there is no logical or hardware malfunctions - correct???

If I am thinking this through correctly and everything is connected right - I am thinking it could be a Head issue and or media damage to SA that caused issue to heads... iPod was dropped.... If so, can we replace heads on these lil guys like we do other drives? or are the architecture different...

Thank you in advance everyone for taking the time to read threw all of this.

Kind Regards,

Hi Joe. My single cable got hosed up a few years ago when I was doing a recovery on one of these drives so I use the setup in the photo. I have left it hooked up because it is always a pain to figure out how the cable goes. It looks like my cable might be hooked up to the opposite side than yours. I checked a few minutes ago and I was able to write to the drive. Inside they are just regular drives on a smaller scale. I seem to recall that these are actually LIF drives instead of ZIF drives but I could be wrong. Sounds like you might be replacing the heads. Rotsa ruck.
