This is the first time I received one of these drives with this fault and believe it is a PCB fault but not sure hunting for a new PCB will give me access to data.
The drive does not spin up only with a memory dump in terminal  as below.
Will a ROM swap give me data even if the NAND is not swapped ?

The problem is in the NAND cache.
Need the same fw version donor PCB with its NAND cache cleared out with terminal command, then write patient's ROM to the donor PCB. Put donor PCB on the patient and power up. It should work fine after that.

I am 100% sure that I received a reply on the email as below but for the life of me I cant find it, so today I received a donor drive that I wiped from beginning to end and cleared the cash and backup the ROM successful. I swapped the rom from the patient to the donor pcb and the patient drive spins up get ready but the donor drive serial number display and can only read first few sectors then disk error.

So swapping the ROM is not the only thing and why is the serial number not that of the patient and cant get data access ?

Is the donor PCB from the same version firmware drive?

Yes it is and the serial number is also out with 2 digits so must be a close match, I did read that the ROM must not be swapped but the ROM from the patient must be written to the Donor ROM so busy with that and see what is going on.

So I am stuck with this drive it seems like it might be a ROM error because the fault get duplicated when I write the patient ROM to the donor PCB and connect to patient drive still dead nothing spins and terminal dead.

Can the flash be disabled in the ROM or can I upload the patient ROM so that someone can see if maybe somebody else messed up this drive before ?

If I load the ROM in RAM then I get RAP CAP SAP errors and cant find it in the ROM but donor ROM loads fine

Not aware of a way to disable the cache/flash. I think it is programmed to operate in that way.

Frank wrote that F3 Rom Explorer software. Perhaps start there to compare ROM structure inconsistencies between the patient and donor ROMs, if any.

No, I didn't, but I wish I could. The author is @E123 at HDD Guru.

Thanks for the information about the F3 Rom reader and it works, but I am still stuck with this drive. Today I received a second donor drive that is just 2 months out from manufacturing date but it is doing the same as the first donor and not sure what I am missing. I wrote the patient ROM to the donor PCB and again the donor drive details is pickup up and no sector access, but if I read the ROM then the patient drive details is displaying in the ROM so somehow this model keep more ROM related info somewhere alse and suspect the head track info also not in the ROM. The picture will show that the drive details does not much patient CAP info directly reading from the drive ?

Not sure if this relates
But pc3k for some models showed 2 copies of the rom in the same rom.
It indicates a 1 or 2 symbol in the upper right of the rom screen.
What is that about?
If it thinks 1 is damaged does it use 2?
What if they are different?

You need to clear the donor's data in the NAND cache. Either initialise the NAND in terminal, or secure erase the donor, or both.

Just to update on this post and after two weeks I am still stuck and posted on two forums and it seems like this drive is a trade secret because I don’t get any help with this fault.

I formatted the donor drive via terminal and also via ATA secure erase

I initialise the NAND via terminal with the F3 T/OI command and that was successful

I recalculated the IAP CRC in the patient Rom and wrote that to donor pcb.

With all of this I still get the donor drive serial number details in startup but reading the ROM is does confirm that patient details is loaded but it still find “fast boot” rom details on this PCB. I did this process on many other models and never got stuck but this drive is something else.

PCB 100731495

Thanks

Juan

The donor's ID must still be stored in the donor's NAND.

Did you try a plain secure erase or an enhanced secure erase? One thing that an enhanced secure erase does is to erase the data in reallocated sectors. Perhaps it also clears the NAND cache???

You might like to try an experiment. Patch the patient's CAP into your working donor's ROM and see if it still works. Then initialise the NAND. This will hopefully copy the patient's ID into the donor's NAND.

Thanks for the response and I already did a Ata erase, follow on a terminal secure erase without power cycle and then NAND format after that, with power cycle details still stuck.
I will try the CAP patch again today although I did that. I wonder if there is a manufacturer NAND reset hard wire function to try will have to look at NANd database

All I can say is that additional operations are performed during an "enhanced" secure erase. To me it isn't clear exactly whether this was actually executed.

So yesterday I tried another disk tool HDAT2 select the “enhanced “ format option with HDAT2 startup disk and format successfully, power it of swap PCB to Patient drive and power on with ROM boot and confirm patient details display, power cycle and normal boot ??
%€*¥+^ Still the bloody donor pcb details
If i read rom module 32 it display the donor board details so this is still somewhere on the donor board, but how do I replace it with patient module because i cant read the module 32 or any other modules from faulty patient board only rom ?
