Does anyone know if matching donors between SSHD and HDD for Seagate laptop drives is possible?  Is there a chance HDD heads would be compatible for the SSHD, and if so, how would you go about matching them?  This is specifically about the ST500UM001 SSHD. Any insight or theories are appreciated.

Hi Nik, int his case you need to match at least the model and the PCB, its not compatible with different models... good luck.

Why do you ask? Is it the cost of the donor?

Like Carlos, personally I have never heard of compatibility between SSHD and HHD.

Nik,

I will take a look in the morning and see if I have any in my inventory. I haven’t added any of my 2.5 inch drives yet to the spreadsheet I shared with you and Chris.

Yes, we have used HDD heads in SSHD and SSHD heads in HDD for 500GB and 1TB Seagate laptop drives. We just match the preamps. I only have notes for ST500LT and ST500LM series though. Nothing on your model ST500UM

I confirm that I have mixed heads successfully between HDD and SSHD.
If they look physically the same and preamp matches, then it should be compatible.

Hmm,....Apparently I don't have a single drive with that model number in my collection. I am really glad to know that there are some options for cross compatibility options. Thanks for sharing folks!
