We just got our PC-3000 last week and have our first drive that I think it can help with.  It is a WD2502ABYS-18B7A0 RE3 SATA drive.  When powered on, the drive clicks a few times, becomes "ready" and spins down.  The DeepSpar sees 0 capacity.

Once the drive is powered on with the PC3k, clicking Autodetect detects it as "WDC Marvell".  I choose "Run Program" and click Autodetect from this screen and it is detected as 3.5" Pinnacle.

I change "Mode" to from Kernel to Normal and leave "Load resources from" at HDD and then I run the program.  It loads some information in to the logging window and then prompts to enter "HDD SA Geometry parameters".  The following output is in the Log window:
Techno mode key
Techno mode key......................... : Ok

RAM:
HDD Info reading........................ : Ok
Heads number............................ : 2

Zone allocation table................... : HDDs RAM reading error - Device Error Detected: "VSCE PERM OVL NOT LOADED. LDR Upload is recomended"

Flash ROM dir reading (Ext)............. : Ok (Active)
Modules directory address............... : 93 176

ROM F/W version......................... : 000500AQ
Overlay F/W version..................... : 05.AQC
Servo F/W version....................... : 04.AS

Heads configuration..................... : by map
Heads number............................ : 2
Heads number in use..................... : 2
Switched off heads...................... : No
Heads map............................... : 0,1

Service area:

SA dir reading (ID)..................... :  SERVO ERROR CODE BASE SvirLatchHang

SA Access............................... : NONE

Configuration reading................... : Module 02 not found

How do I determine the "HDD SA Geometry parameters"? How can I tell if there is a backup of the SA?  Any suggestions on the errors from log output (like doing a LDR upload)?

HI:
First, you first choose head map No. 0 head and separate starting later SA modules to see if you can read!

If not then attempt to use the No.1 Magnetic heads to read and try ...

Welcome to the group. I am a relative newbie to PC3K (2 years and yes I still consider myself a newbie)

When a WD spins up clicks and shuts down (usually 3 times) it is generally head failure 95% of the time. WD are not as susceptible to firmware issues as say Seagates are. Start by cleaning the contacts on the PCB and see if that works. Then complete a head test (you will see it in a drop down menu for most families) which will tell you if one or both have failed. You can also switch each of the heads off in the RAM (or ROM) to see which one has failed, but as your drive has only two heads more than likely both have failed. This method is good if the head that is set to load the SA is bad and you can load it from another platter then you might be able to get data from all the other good heads, but as your drive has only 2 heads it’s not really worth it. When working with the ROM changing head mapping always make sure you have a ROM backup.

·         Personally the first thing I would do is to open the drive in the cleanroom (if you have one?) and take a look at the heads and platters. This is not ideal on some WD drives as it can be tough to re-align the HSA if it is mounted through the lid, but the more you try to work with the drive in PC3K without checking the heads physically, the more risk you have of damaging the platter surface. I have attached a picture of a drive I got in last night. It’s a 2 head WD drive like yours. The ferrite slider is actually on top of the head stack, so each time the drive was powered up, the slider was bouncing around the platters.

SA backup is something you do manually from a drop down menu and can only be done if the drive is reading the SA which yours is not.

Words of advice – Read the Manual forwards and backwards and don’t forget you get a years free support from ACE.

Remember this is just my advice and I am just a newbie as well.
