Welcome to the group. I am a relative newbie to PC3K (2 years and yes I still consider myself a newbie)
When a WD spins up clicks and shuts down (usually 3 times) it is generally head failure 95% of the time. WD are not as susceptible to firmware issues as say Seagates are. Start by cleaning the contacts on the PCB and see if that works. Then complete a head test (you will see it in a drop down menu for most families) which will tell you if one or both have failed. You can also switch each of the heads off in the RAM (or ROM) to see which one has failed, but as your drive has only two heads more than likely both have failed. This method is good if the head that is set to load the SA is bad and you can load it from another platter then you might be able to get data from all the other good heads, but as your drive has only 2 heads it’s not really worth it. When working with the ROM changing head mapping always make sure you have a ROM backup.
· Personally the first thing I would do is to open the drive in the cleanroom (if you have one?) and take a look at the heads and platters. This is not ideal on some WD drives as it can be tough to re-align the HSA if it is mounted through the lid, but the more you try to work with the drive in PC3K without checking the heads physically, the more risk you have of damaging the platter surface. I have attached a picture of a drive I got in last night. It’s a 2 head WD drive like yours. The ferrite slider is actually on top of the head stack, so each time the drive was powered up, the slider was bouncing around the platters.
SA backup is something you do manually from a drop down menu and can only be done if the drive is reading the SA which yours is not.
Words of advice – Read the Manual forwards and backwards and don’t forget you get a years free support from ACE.
Remember this is just my advice and I am just a newbie as well.
