TOSHIBA MQ04ABF100, reads but cant get SA

I have this drive. Starting to crash. lots of yellow sectors but it reads.

Cant generate head map or read CP

I have pc3k 7.4.19

I get this, but it reads.

Cant disable smart.

Cant read CPs

After I read sector 0 it starts constant repetitive seeking like it trying to update smart in loop

Any ideas?

I have not swapped heads.

The drive powers up normally. Gets DSC and DRD and is quiet,

Read ID fine.

Any tech commands gets error

read sector 0 completes normally and goes back to DRD-DSC

but then the drive starts repetitive seeking.

The beginning of the drive is where the media slow areas are

far out on the drive it read green sectors for long stretches so the heads are working.

Anything tech mode related fails.

Cant read cp or zones, service tracks

I find these drive with too much platter degradation.

If you can read data well and fast on other areas, it seems to be that.

Have you tried read by Utility?

Some Toshibas are vendor commands locked, they are usually running Dell FW.

I agree with platter degradation - very common thing.

FWIR you shouldn’t read with PC3000 utility for these Toshiba drives. PC3000 will read sectors and show them as being read correctly, but the actual data will be corrupt.

If you want to circumvent the lock, one way might be to use an unlocked donor ROM and then patch it with the CP section from the patient ROM. I'm assuming that this model doesn't have discware.

1 from the locked drive and these other 2 that were the closest matches I could find

1KZT is unlocked

H80T is locked - thats the client

SNBT not locked

i transplanted d7000 - ff000 -1

spins up clicks alot

heads are not tracking - just sweeping

after a minute spins down

lights go out

no access to cp

next I'll transplant d7000- fffff

Toshiba's latest models have discware. If yours is one of these, then a ROM hack may fail due to incompatibility between the ROM code and the SA overlays. I think the latest ROMs now also have a digital signature of some kind. I'm analysing one of them now.

If you remove the unlocked PCBs from the drives, are you still able to dump their CPs?

The SNBT ROM appears to be more recent than the others. I would experiment with 1KZT.

If you can't reach techno mode with 1KZT code and patient CPs, even when the PCB is on the drive, then perhaps the lock is is the CPs or in the SA?

eventually comes ready

got full iid serial number

it even let me read CP = RC and SG, MN, RZ, ZH

but got hung reading WC, DD

couldnt read any cp or rom with terminal

but it does get id and sn

That tells you that the VSCs are in the ROM code. CP 0xDD is the P-list so it's SA resident. I don't know about WC, but the other CPs are ROM resident (obviously).
