I am sure you all know by now from Facebook groups etc. The new version of PC-3000 allows you to unlock a WD SMR ROM and get SA access via the USB PCB. Although converting the USB PCB to SATA and connecting direct to PC-3000 is still needed for reading stability.

- You need to read the USB ROM. It is recommended removing the ROM from the PCB and reading externally, but pogo pin readers may work. Although using pogo's are hit and miss sometimes and they have been known to corrupt ROM's.
- Once read, open the WD utility and you will see a box 'Unlock SED HDD'.
- This allows you to unlock the ROM.
- Download the new unlocked ROM and write the ROM back.
- The SA will now be accessible via the USB PCB which is still needed to decrypt the drive.
- Converting the USB to SATA is also recommended, or perhaps at a minimum the USB Stabilizer.

I don’t think V2 will ever be supported, I think the encryption is unique to each drive.

Hence the unlocked ROM fix.

And to be honest if you have an unlocked ROM and use a pogo SATA PCB its as easy as decrypting via PC3K.

It's excellent news, for those who don't have the update currently, can we send the ROM dump to someone have to update and unlock it?
is the approach working?

Yes, in theory you can send the ROM to someone to modify and send back.  Hopefully you wouldn't expect it for free and offer to help the other guy pay for his updates.
