Please provide a full resource dump.

Module 0xC5 should contain the real family name, although this could have been hacked.

Show us both sides of the PCB. What is the PCB part number? The date codes on the ICs can also tell us a lot.

The DCM in the ROM doesn't match the DCM on the label, even for genuine drives. Instead, it matches the DCM in SA mod 0x02.

You definitely need a 4TB model because all 5 platters are in use. I suspect that this drive was refurbished and then returned to the field as a 3TB warranty replacement. Someone then faked the label.

This is my fake checker tool. It runs in a CMD window.

if so. It's very difficult for me to choose to buy a hard drive. I have to buy all 4TB codes with DCM: VJ, TJ, V2, T2. Basically need 4 good working ones to replace one after another.

I think this is the 4TB version refurbished to 3TB with 02 defective heads cut out, there are a total of 10 Heads in the refurbished drive as I checked.

Let's first examine the date codes on the ICs and PCB. That will tell us when the drive was manufactured. That may help to narrow down your choices.

Also, if you input the real serial number into WD's warranty checker, that may also tell us the manufacture date and the family. (warranty expiry date = manufacture date + 3 or 5 years + 1 month).

It looks like the drive was manufactured during or after week 40 of 2013.

  • PCB - 3313 - week 33 of 2013
  • motor cont - 337 - week 37 of 2013

If so, as I said. The only way is to search for drives with different DCM and replace them for accurate testing.

I've examined 2 similar FW to urs n something doesnt add up

Both r manufactured in late Apr. "2016"

The marking on the PCB suggest that ur drive is manufactured from ww40 yy2013 up to (I would say) ~half 2014

So... either this drive was refurbished by WD n @some point some1 refurbed it again

or it was only refurbed by that some1 n went all the trouble to mess around with everything not leaving any trace to anything

if i go with option 2 then the only way finding a suitable donor will b trial and error n the only thing u know for sure is the HM, preamp n MJ

You need a drive that is guaranteed to have 5 platters and 10 heads. A 3TB drive would be a gamble, unless the seller could tell you the head map.

I don't see anything unusual from the PCB. Or it is replaced with rom on another PCB instead of the previous old PCB.

" I checked. and it is exactly 5 platters and 10 Heads. I don't understand why the 3TB drive is like that. The 2 drives I have are the same. Hix"

why a 3tb has 10 heads
because sometimes they build 4tb drives
and in testing find problems
so they disable some heads and sell it as a 3tb

They can also just choose to build 4tb's and sell them as 3's,

Back in the beginning of time...
The OEM i was working for was selling priam 35mb and 70 mb winchester disk drives.
We noticed they seemed to be exactly the same. So we swapped the 70mb rom onto the 35 and reformatted the drive.
Worked fine.
So we paid the lower price and sold them as 70's.
Supplier eventually noticed....
