This was a dropped wd50NDZW
I swapped heads and got access for a while..
Now I wonder if its messed up...
I couldnt get SA access to I went straight for the data.
It sounded great and still reads but all zeros....

ANy suggestions or advice would be appreciated..
Thanks

What board is the sata board for a 810035 ?
Is it locked, the rom didnt work on a 800022
Where can I get an unlocked board for a decent price?

Here is what I tried...
customer drive is WD50NDZW_11MR8S1 board - 800041-003-P1
Donor WD50NDZW-11A8JS1 board - 810035 -000-P0
My unlocked SATA board 800022-002-P1

Before I took the heads from my donor I wanted to try to read the DONOR SA.
I removed the ROM and programmed the 800022 through bootcode and terminal
Board was now dead... So rewrote a rom from WD40NDZW-11MR8S0 - board is working again.
I tried to resolder the rom to the DONOR board - something went wrong, looks good but board getting hot not working.
I have soldered lots of roms and I dont see any issues but.....

Transplanted heads from DONOR to PATIENT
Booted patient with Patient board and Donor heads
Patient came ready started DE task and imaging catalog
Partway through it had some reading issues and hard reset or repowered.
After that drive appears to read really fast and all new sectors are zeros.

========
So I assume its still encrypted and this is just to fix the SA and generate a head map.

It's SpyGlass2 family SMR drive.

The only can advice try to follow such steps.
You need to read SA module 129 by ID using the unlocked PCB, and extract ROM module 1A2.
Then write this module to the patient ROM, then use this modified ROM with the original USB PCB,
converted to SATA according this scheme https://yadi.sk/i/32aO_GgmBS1nhg

Please note that this solution is experimental, we are collecting the statistics.
But it worked once with WD50NDZW-11MR8S1 SpyGlass2 before.

This Drives lock itself their MCU and you need a special Unlock PCB for work the SA and UNLOCK it.  I know because I already worked with 1 of these Drives and to reapir/fix SA you need the UNLOCK PCB to fix/work on SA/Modules/Firmware and then you can Recover the Data.

Here is a link to an unlocked SATA PCB.

https://www.hddheadtools.com/product/wd-2060-810035-data-recovery-unlock-pcb/

The mod 129/1A2 trick only works if the data in not encrypted through the USB MCU.

So to be clear...

the 810035 - is MCU locked and needs a $399 board to work with SA

or
I can solder SATA connector to 810035 and monkey with the ROM and work with SA  - is that correct ?

I am sure you can find one much cheaper.

This was just an example of what is available.

Or, yes you can change the USB PCB to SATA, change the ROM and that gives you SA access.

However if the drive is encrypted via the USB MCU it will still encrypted.

I think we are all learning about these drives still.

Probably you need to do both.  One does not have anything to do with the other.  A Locked MCU needs Unlock PCB and if its not encrypted you can recover DATA using the same Unlock PCB.  Need to write original ROM to it or SWAP ROM to Unlock PCB.  If Its encrypted you can fix SA with Unlock PCB and then you can Recover Using Original PCB.

you know the 800022 board has 2 stubby little pins that are the terminal connector....
and you can program with bootcode mode.

I forget or I have a brainfart, as these are still new and have not seen much of them.

No I dont know or at least not remember it at all.  Anyway Good Luck for it to works with it.  If you can access MCU to fix SA/Modules/Firmware, Ill be more than happy to know how to do it and the files to use for the boot code on a 800022.  I already bought the Unlock PCB but if exist other methods Im here to learn and share too.

At least with a DFL-PCIe I dont need to do this as it came with the Terminal Interface with multi use Ready to use on any HDD Model/Brand + 2 set of tiny cables to use on small pins for Terminal or you can buy their USB Terminal with 2 Simultaneous Connectios for Terminal use and includes the Tiny Cables too.  Its just a Plug & Play Option Module for any HDD Brand/Model.

Regarding the External HDD ROM Reader/Programmer I got it too received as a gift with the Unlock PCB and works great but I prefer my previous model came with the Pogo Cable included too and support more IC/ROM variant.  Which I bought earlier for read really fast HDD ROMs as I dont like the Desoldering/Soldering method as too many bad things can happen even if you are a MASTER doing it something always can happen and when happens its VERY BAD with an original IC ROM Completly destrioyed,  So I go first on the easy way if not works then I reconsider desoldering it.

Very often these drives will reset or corrupt the second level translator (T2) if you go straight to DE. Once that happens you will just get zeroes. It's very important that you save module 190 as soon as possible before starting the recovery. You can use a SATA board to backup the service area. I save 190 first and then the rest of the A level modules followed by B-level and then C and Dd. If both copies of 190 are damaged you should try to read them with "ignore reading errors" selected. You might have to splice a good secondary translator together and there are some new options in PC-3000 to help with T2 problems. After you save the important modules (at least A-C) and verify the drive is working you should lock UA writing to help prevent T2 changes. If the drive has MCU encryption you can wire the original PCB for a SATA connection as shown in the PCB photos above. This same procedure can be used for Charger models.

P.S. drivestar.biz has great prices on unlocked PCBs. If you are in the USA you can select DHL shipping and they usually arrive in 3-5 days.

SPI (25xx chips) is a standard. I would think that you would only need to match the pinout, voltage and capacity.

93Cxx chips (microwire) also appear to be standardised, as are 24Cxx chips, although their pinouts may vary.

I have seen one Sanyo chip with a strange pinout and protocol, so that chip may be a problem.

Find something not match.  For a WD50NDZW You needs an Unlock PCB 2060-810035, you cant get access to Data using 2060-810022 on these Spyglass 2 Models.  I know because these happens to me and I ended getting a 2060-810035 Unlocked PCB to reads DATA and fix/repair/unlock SA Area.  Drive have now weak heads and waiting to get Donor Drive.

What is the function of 0x1A2? It looks to me as if it contains a solitary 96-byte hash or signature.

I tried to find module 0x129 in various Spyglass and Charger dumps, but was unsuccessful. I can't find any reference to 0x129 in the SA directory modules (0x01) in these dumps, so I can't see how you can read this module by ID. Or am I misunderstanding the terminology?

FWIW, the active 0x1A2 module in the following ROM dump is zero filled:

Just a small comment to convey clarity in case it has not been mentioned:
This SATA Adapter PCB is going to provide firmware access to make modifications, save firmware, etc.
However, the user data will still be encrypted.

Because of the controller based encryption for that particular drive, need to clone via USB PCB, by making custom soldering USB to SATA adaptation to points on native USB PCB (like on the older USB drives), or by using another of the Dolphin's USB adapter.

There is a zero-ohm resistor adjacent to the USB connector. Sometimes it develops a dry solder joint. If so, then reflowing the solder should fix it.

You actually need to search for Mod 129 which you can do with PC3000. It is not listed by the directory for some reason on these drives. I presume it’s because its connected to the encryption on the dive.
