Hi all Gurus,
                      Hi,
I have received 5tb seagate external one touch  mfg 2023
It has problem with pcb.On this original pcb .It shows Busy. But Not spin .i can read rom  so in general i have swiped pcb from donor with patient rom .Drive is spinning ok and Rom also read .But no data area access . both pcbs are identical  .Here i am attaching pic of drive .I think data is encrypted so i tried usb connector of its original only but no success .Sir now i have  senario .1. replace Servo IC  as i doubt .or MCU.MCU veery hard to replace . I need your help to find out which kind of ics are they .Like BGA or double pin i dont know .So pls help me out anything regarding data recovery .you suggest .Thanking you .

What exactly do you mean by ‘no data access?’. Are you saying you get errors when reading a sector, or that you can read them but the data is encrypted. And can you post the terminal log of you have one.

Can you reach the SA with the donor PCB + patient ROM?

Are you sure the PCB is native? The SDRAM was manufactured during week 52 of 2021 while the DOM on the label is 14 Jan 2023. That's a difference of more than 1 year. It could be that this model was a slow mover, but it would be something to check.

Does the serial number in the ROM (CAP) match the label?

What is the drive's capacity when it is installed behind the USB-SATA bridge? If it is less than the native SATA capacity, this would suggest that there is a reserved area at the end of the UA.

Can you upload your donor and patient ROMs? Some newer Seagate MCUs have a unique key, and the ROMs have unique digital signatures. (It doesn't look like yours is one of these, though.)

I've noticed that Seagate's external drives often (always?) grab one sector from the end, but I've never seen the firmware do anything with it.

FWIW, the PSID code on the label suggests that the drive is a SED, so maybe the bridge is not involved in encryption.

I suspect this is SED and the donor PCB with patient ROM just can decrypt.

Do these new Seagate need MCU swap?

The bridges on these units may have chip but probably unlikely.

Password activated hardware encryption according to Seagate spec.

Question is if it's native PCB or on bridge and if it's locked .

Maybe a question for Ace TS.

I can't see any security certificates, nor do I see any digital signature that is related to the MCU.

Not sure either,

This drive is listed on the site above as self encrypted. It's possible customer has set a password with utility.

Access might need the software detailed installed  and maybe USB bridge to see if it prompts for password.

I have had this drive before I think and I didn't see any encrypted sectors, but I did have original PCB and USB bridge.

HELLO,
I have the original usb bridge but not good luck .I have tried a brand new 5tb hdd with unlock rom even there i found data with structure , Try with any ther usb bridge it works normal .SO there is no encryption itself. My client is a photographer and he even know about this password feature .I can access sa area with donor pcb unlock rom from patient on it .

The following has nothing to do with the USB bridge. That's irrelevant for those models.

For some of the M15 family drives, the encryption is in the MCU. If swapping patient ROM to a donor PCB and testing on the patient drive (donor's encryption in the donor MCU being active!!!), it may cause firmware damage on the patient's SA, which prevents the decryption process from working correctly.

I believe Ace may be able to help by fixing the firmware damage, but first, the original/native PCB (so native MCU) is needed in working condition with native ROM on it (it could be another ROM chip, but we need the native ROM code on it).

ACE helped with one case I had in this condition, but I have not had a chance to reverse engineer their method.

I would think that, if there were a key (or salt) within the MCU, the firmware would complain about an error in the digital signature (when a donor MCU is used) and the drive would not spin up.

But In My Case My Patient Hard Drive Is Working ok With Donor Pcb And Patient Rom .All SA is accessible only data area not open .There no question about encryption yet .Its about Data Area is not accessible not even encrypted data shown .Sector are not readable .

Do you still want to troubleshoot the electronics on the patient PCB? I could help with that.

Correct, the drive initializes correctly and seems normal. But it aborts (ABR or UNC error) on every sector. It is encryption mismatch, because of using donor PCB with different encryption keys in the MCU.

Try to repair the native PCB.

Maybe MRT has a solution for this 'sector access interruption' phenomenon:
