haven't taken the board apart yet and will do now. I thought I can work on it using software and not hardware.

Thanks bro and hope you safe

you say it needs it initialize from target disk mode
that suggests that it is seeing the drive
what properties does disk utility show for the drive
is it giving you the proper size?

What does sudo diskutil list show ?

Sounds like the drive is working but its not seeing it as initialized
if its encrypted then rstudio wont see anything
sounds like security issues not hardware

filevault and a t2 chip are hard - there are limited utilities that can deal with that

you could also boot into internet recovery mode and use diskutility to see if its detecting a proper sized disk..

I had one of those for a forensic job.
It was functional and we could boot and login
but we could not get it to give us a physical image of the drive
we booted cellebrite and several other high-end imaging tools and none would do it.
This was a year ago and those tools hadn't quite figured out how to deal with it yet.

If the drive mounts in R-Studio with correct capacity and it interprets the volume(s) correctly, then it will show something: a lock on the volume.

With viewing in hexedit, it will show encrypted data (if encrypted).
Then, with right clicking and selecting at the bottom the "Unlock encrypted drive" option, then you see decrypted data. Picture attached.

my experience with a working t2 mac
was that target mac would not allow access to the raw disk

even though we had the password and could login to the targetted mac - we still had no raw access to the ssd
hexdump -C /dev/diskxsx
dd
etc all would fail
mac implemented another user privilege level about root - system I think
you can boot the target into single user mode and disable some of the disk access contraols
we did all that still didnt allow external access

another approach might be to boot the target into single user mode
so that it has mode trust - its not an external trying to access the drive.
We got made techsupport aware that it wasnt working
Ill check with my cop friend - it was his tools black bag or something...

Paul - he should know.....

This reflects our difficulties - same story.

the tools we used at the time were
paladin
sumeri
blacklight

none actually worked
we boot using their special USB drive

it was supposed to allow us to make a forensic image but didnt

we reported to techsupport

this was early in the new apfs t2 era
so maybe they have worked out the bugs now
