Hi everyone,
I’m dealing with a WD20NMVW 2TB USB drive (ShrekLT)  with  encryption via JMicron JMS538S. . The customer set a password with WD SmartWare, but they forgot it.

The drive is healthy and not an SED drive.

As far as I know, without the original password the data can’t be decrypted.

I just wanted to check if anyone has any ideas or tricks I might be missing.

Thanks!

Please email an SA backup  and several encrypted sectors from the beginning of the drive, I'll check if it's possible to decrypt the data.

I guess your are not interested in recovery.

I have an obvious idea, but it requires another drive for potentially data destructive testing.

Sorry Artem, I didn’t check the forum lately.

The client already came and picked up the drive, so the case is closed on my side.

Thanks for the offer and help, much appreciated.

Anyway, he wasn’t willing to pay much in this particular case.

That's ok,
for future reference I have a way to bypass the password on 90% of JMicron encrypted drives.

That’s very interesting, thanks for sharing.

For future reference, does your method require the physical HDD to be shipped to your lab, or would a disk image be sufficient?

Also, what would the approximate cost range be for this kind of case?

I don't need access to a drive.
I need an SA backup and a few encrypted sectors from the beginning of the drive, if the password is bypassable I can email you the correct key sector with no password.

Please email to me directly for the price.
