Where did the burning smell come from? Is the PCB native? Does the S/N match the label?

the smell came from the adapter board in the external enclosure
power can kill heads
but  wouldnt expect that with the adapter

board matches and has no visible damage or smell

Your HDD PCB (0B36131) has two levels of protection. The first consists of two TVS diodes and two fuses. The second consists of two e-fuses, 5V and 12V. It's hard to imagine an overvoltage getting past both defences.

Moreover, an overvoltage on the 12V supply targets the spindle motor and VCM side of the motor controller. The heads would be powered from +5V and -3V. The latter is generated by the 5V side of the motor controller.

If you can upload a photo of the bridge, we might be able to discern the path taken by the overvoltage.

There are two USB ports. One is protected by TVS diode D21. That has sustained an overvoltage on the 5V USB supply. If you remove D21, the port may come alive.

The other port is protected by TVS diode D20. That appears to be OK. Can you tell us its markings? I expect that D20 and D21 are identical.

In short, it doesn't appear that the AC adaptor was the culprit, so I can't see how the HDD could have been clobbered.

Never mind. I see that the part marking is "SM" or "5M".

I see that the 8-pin Nuvoton 3941S IC has a hole in it. This IC is a fan driver and is powered from a 12V supply. That must come from the adaptor.

How did the client manage to clobber the DC input and USB port at the same time? I don't get it.

he said he plugged in the wrong adapter.

I imagine that he plugged in a 19v monitor or laptop jack by mistake

I dont have the bridge board.

The Nuvoton IC has a maximum voltage rating of 19V. Maybe there are clues in the areas of the board that he hasn't shown us.

Hi

I just got another one of these doing the exact same thing.

Spins up
makes a quick chirp-chirp
ID's
Cant read
Makes no sounds of the recalibrating across the platters.
Its almost like they are stuck on the ramp.

I seem to recall that the same chirping symptom happens after swapping a headstack between two working drives. To me this suggests that the firmware is interrogating the preamp and retrieving a serial number which it compares against a serial number in the ROM. If that is the case, then a head swap would be inconclusive because it would produce the same symptom.
