have you seen this.
He says that the wd always want to seek to mid-platter

so if thre is scratch on outer platter area then new heads will just be killed by the seek

so they somehow fooled the drive into reading the mid-platter seek in the outer area.

So how would that work? modify the zone table or translator to think the mid seek is really in the outer area?

What if you told it there was 500 cylinders instead of 1000 - then half would be 250....

This is the same guy who posted to HDD Guru a year ago:

He claimed that "in my product, the read head can pass over a crater on the platter many times and without damage". Now he appears to be telling a different story. 

He is still producing the same shitty videos. I have to squint to see anything.

I can only imagine what is demonstrated in the video is achieved by:

1) Filling in the disk surface scratches with some kind of alloy and resurfacing to level out the platter surface (this preserves the head from physical damage)

2) Manipulating the head positioning at CHS level, though I think this could only be done if at least one system head surface is in good condition to operate the firmware. 

While it is a great technological achievement, it is unfortunately not economically viable given the limited customer satisfaction potential from, at best, a partial recovery result.

It's become even less relevant in the year that's passed since it was posted.  

It's a nice demo of technical ability assuming it's genuine and if you're still getting those cases of older drives that have clients with deep pockets great - I don't .  It's value for general use assuming the methodology isn't transferable as he hasn't posted a modern spyglass yet I assume it  isn't,  has to be limited.
