Hi All, 

Got the above drive for Data recovery, old IDE WD which seem to spin and initialize well, 

however no access to user LBA under MRT , Drive reports correct size however there is no ability to scan anything(all blocks are red), WD utility does not identify the drive and I am unable to find any info about the family to be able to manually select, has anyone have any experience with these old drives ? 

based on the client the drive was installed on an old PC and does no longer work after years of not working

i suspect head failure of some sort, 

any info regarding on how to deal with these old IDE drives would be appreciated

I don’t know this model specifically (and I don’t use MRT for FW fixes) but I suspect you need to be reading this drive by CHS.

it is a 1.2 GB (31200) sorry for the typo  and PC3000 does not identify it either

No joy, Unable to read user LBA , nor access any part of the service area (if anything like that exists in these older drives 

I think it is a heads failure problem and what ever info I get is the ROM loading and not the actual service area 

if anyone has any other ideas you please chime in, I never worked with these older IDE drives 

I will start looking for a reasonably priced donor in the mean time

Here is a databook of preamp ICs of that era:

Ace's document mentions the VM723430POP preamp in a related model (page 216 of the databook). 

"The VM723430 is a high-performance, very low-power read/write preamplifier designed for use with external thin-film recording heads."

These consist of a coil which functions as both the read and write element. Therefore I would think that head failures would be unlikely, unless they were damaged by a head crash. I have no experience with PC HDDs of this type, but I used to service CDC storage module drives around that time. I only saw one head failure that was due to an electrical cause, and that was an open circuit in the head's flex lead.

you may  be able to edit the headmap in rom and determine if it can come ready with just 0,1 or 0&1

Have tried that, it err out when trying to read existing or when trying to save anything to the service area, surprisingly the drive comes ready, but with PATA may be it is the norm 

I think the heads are gone, it fails anything that to do with read/write tests , i think the what I see is the drive id in ROM loading but nothing else

I will better know once I will open the drive

AFAICT from Ace's documentation, the microcontroller in this model has real ROM, ie read-only memory.

Does this drive have a terminal port? I would trace the Tx/Rx pins and see where they go.

AIUI, Ace's documentation is saying that any head map manipulation needs to be done at the electronic level by cutting PCB traces, redirecting HS pins, and interposing logic gates. I wonder how many people were ever able to do that?

BTW, the preamp that is pictured in the docs supports 4 heads. The 31200 model appears to have 6 heads. I'm guessing the HDA pinout is the same except for the extra HS bit (HS2).

Drive spins up no problems, sounds like calibration goes with no issues, changing status to ready no issue,

i am getting the serial number and drive capacity , however when trying to access user LBA it is all erring out

, tried all the possible jumpers settings, tried the USB to IDE rout, no password locked, universal utility sees drive serial and capacity but scan all red blocks 

no clicking, i strongly believe there is a problem with heads or translation of heads as it is emulating 16 heads, may be a straight swap will help, i think this drive may be one that the PCB can be swapped with no firmware copy

I never done this, however very well experiences with micro soldering and have all the equipment, I will do that as last resort

I am getting a donor drive that is working, that may be helping in this recovery

That is exactly what I was thinking, it is one of the first WDs 1 GB Drive, before they made things more difficult, may be a straight swap will work here, appreciate the assistance will update as soon as I have something

Zones 18 - 21 look strange. Aside from the large cylinder number, cylinder 37634 is the only cylinder in each of zones 18, 19 and 20. :-???

Also, when I examined the SecCfg module, I found an additional copy of the P-list at the end. :-?

Several of the translator modules contain "noise". It would appear that programmers don't bother clearing RAM before writing their modules. ISTM that it would be good practice to perform full track dumps in those cases where critical modules are corrupted. Hopefully the missing data may be stored in other areas, even if it is only noise.
