Hi Guys,

Got another fun RAID job out of an old server, drives inside are Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 ST3300655SS with the 29 pins interface that looks a bit like a SATA.
The ones that i did before were SCSI so my adaptec card that i usually use doesn't seem to have these type of ports.

Can anyone recommend a controller that can read these type of drives using a PC motherboard(PCIe or PCI)?
Is it possible to find controllers with the exact same interface? or do i need to get one with Mini-SAS or another and find a converting cable?

Thanks

I use this card to image SAS drives from a RAID setup. I use the jbod mode so the controller doesn't try to interpret the raid info stored on the drive. There was an older model that was listed as NON-RAID  I have both. I don't think the raid controller is a factor in the recovery except knowing the raid level and strip size that helps with reconstruction. Most 15KnSAS drives I have seen die a horrible death due to the heads hitting the platters. Hopefully you have enough good drives to recover with.

I think Oded might mean SCSI rather than SAS if its 29 pins.

Dallas is as old as the hills so he will have some good advice on these controllers.

He normally gets up at about 4pm as they serve happy hour at the trailer park at 5pm, so he should get back to you soon.

Thanks Jim & Tim,

Jim, I was looking at the exact same controller model here in Australia, if it does the job maybe i'll grab it - is it possible to image a single drive through it? can a drive be in a standalone mode?

Hi Tim, this is a similar drive:

The interface is SFF-8482 with 29 points.

and again love your pings with Dallas, will wait for the response LOL :-)

Cheers

I don't think I have ever had a 29 pin SAS drive in which is what confused me. For my standard SAS recoveries I use a High Point Rocket RAID non-raid controller. I will send you the exact model tomorrow.

thanks Tim, if you can send the model will be great.
Same for me, that's the first 29 pin SAS that i got in the lab.

Hello All,
It has been awhile, but here is my parts list for doing RAID Recoveries.
I had a special frame built to hold the backplane and I use the square case so that I can place the Backplane ontop of the computer.  the 1000 Watt BeQuiet gives plenty of power to work with the drives as well as many connections.

Hope that this helps

I have not had this problem. So far every drive I have ever attached has worked. Can you give me some specifics on when you have this problem? I am usually using 3ware and Adaptec controllers and any drive has worked. I would like to know one that wont so I can try it,  I have been been telling the classes to get SAS because it’s a better controller and if you are havaing an issue I need to test it before it becomes a problem.

Did someone say beer and trailer park?

Also, Scott: The LSI 1068 chip set (I believe) based SAS controllers and RAID controllers did have a 2TB limit. The RAID's themselves could be larger of course, but the controller would only see the first 2TB's of each individual disk. The LSI SAS 6 controllers and newer all do not have this limitation.

Maybe that's what he's referring to? Just a thought.

To answer the OP's question. I use Dell LSI SAS 6 HBA's in juntion with Dell's Powervault MD1000 boxes to image SAS drives. Can image anywhere from one to all the ports at once. Helps when working with larger number of drives in an array.

Thanks

Thanks Guys appreciate the info.
I bought this one yesterday:
Luckily Tim, i see that's the same one you use, so I'll check it out when i get it.
Do you need to set it up initially to mount the drives as NON-RAID i am assuming?

Not as far as I remember. If you do not set anything up in the BIOS (just boot up the PC), then its None-RAID

Hey Scott: I just ordered some equipment for a client, and it was kind of difficult to get assurance that the drives would work with the HBA I'm using for a ZFS machine... and the drives are HGST 10TB SAS that use the 4Kn format. LSI not only doesn't explicitly indicate which cards support 4Kn... even if the HBA does; it's not a global feature. It's specific! So I had to make sure in their white paper that the drive was on the HCL of the HBA. I did however find a great deal on the 10TB SAS drives, New, 4Kn, etc etc - for $290. :-o
